Best ereader for managing large collections?

Oct 20, 2012 20:09

I have around 4,000 + fanfiction ebooks saved on my computer, and while I already have two ereaders capable of holding all of them, (the Kindle Fire and Nook 1st Gen,) neither of them make it easy to keep track of all of the stories on there. I want to know if there are any ereaders out there that either have a large internal memory, or the option ( Read more... )

I don't know about organizing your fics on an e-reader, or if any of the readers out there have that kind of capability, but I use Calibre (http://calibre-ebook.com/) to manage my library (I've got about six thousand fics, plus e-books) and it's fabulous. It's free, has a download feature for fanfic, and lets you tag your books to organize them in multiple ways (i.e. by fandom, by pairing, by category, etc). That way I don't have to keep all my fic on my Kindle, and I can tell in a moment if I've got a certain fic, if I've read it, if I've enjoyed it, etc.

Hope this helps!

Thanks for the information. I'm mostly looking for a way to manage fics on the device itself, but this might work as a temporary measure. :)

I find that if I have all my books (around 5,000) in Calibre, it turns into even more of a resource hog than it is normally.

The Sony PRS line of readers are the best I've found for managing a large collection on the device itself. I have over 2000 ebooks on my device ( ... )

I have a sony PRS 650, and I think couple with Calibre it's the best reader to deal with large library and collection.

I have over 1.600 fanfiction/Ebooks on my reader, I classed them per fandom, and then per pairing, and so on.... I think I have over 160 collections on the reader where I can choose from. And like said in another comment you don't have to thumb through the 20 pages, you can just use the alphebetical index to go on the collection you want.

I wouldn't want to change my device against any other. And Sony is multi reader: epub, rtf, word, pdf ... and many more. And Calibre allows you to convert the books if needed ...
Well in one word, Sony + Calibre = joy

My first ereader was the first gen Sony Pocket model, in pink no less. While I really liked that little reader, I soon upgraded to the first gen Nook. Then last year to a Nook Tablet. I don't think managing fanfic on any of them is ideal. I am toying with getting another Sony, just for fanfic and the ability to do the wireless library check out. Checking books out from the library was what attracted me to the Sony and then the Nook from the get go, the Kindle didn't have that ability at the time. But I've always had to download library books via digital editions

But my question is, can someone give me some more specifcs about organizing fanfics using Calibre? I put all my fanfic in Calbre, but I only do basics with it, add a cover, covert to epub, transfer to my Nook. Can you point me to a tutorial, or give it to me in a "dummies version"?

Calibre has a "tags" column in which you can create your own tags. So you can have "Star Trek: The Original Series" or "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" as well as "Jadzia/Julian" "Jadzia/Kira" "Jadzia/Worf" etc.

All you do is click on the book so it's highlighted, then click on the box in that line under "tags" and start typing. Hit "return" and it's done.

Not sure if this pic will work, but this should show you what I mean:

I use the tag column to create my collection categories. I'll see if I can find a tutorial. I'll also see if I can find a tutorial on how to add the plugin Fanfiction Downloader to Calibre because for fans it's an awesome plugin to have.

That would be fantastic as I'm also looking for a good way for managing large collections, and the most useful tags/custom columns to do so.

You might look into rooting your Nook. I rooted mine and now it is essentially an Android tablet.

I now use Moonreader+ which is a great reading app that allows for folders, so I can organize my fic by fandom, and it allows for file management directly on the device. I can move or delete files right there. (That way I can load it up with a ton of new fic and then easily delete the dreck and move the keepers into a save file for later organization).

If you're interested, I can find the link I used to do the rooting. The method I used actually runs the OS off an SD card, so if you want to return your Nook to it's original configuration, you just remove the card.

I might try that, but from what I've read rooting seems a bit complicated and I'd hate to ruin anything.
