She woke up gasping for breath and struggling to fill her lungs with air after another dream. The captain’s cabin was dark, save for the glow of the fish tank lighting the room. Her breathing slowly returned to normal as she sat there until she was calmer. After Mindoir, Akuze and the beacon’s message, nightmares weren't exactly something new to her. However this one was currently holding its top spot on the list of worst ones. She supposed it was hard to beat dying in space for nightmares.

Shepard sighed after checking the time on the clock next to her. She’d slept three hours this time and knew she wasn’t going to be going back to sleep any time soon. She’d already tried that in the past and it never worked. Instead she got up and got dressed for the day. She had more than a few hours before the day shift started and most of the crew that wasn’t working the night shift was most likely asleep still.

Well at least she’d have a little quiet time before things started to get hectic.

-

She stopped her trip briefly to grab a glass of water from the Mess Hall before continuing down to the Engineering floor. Grunt, Jack and Zaeed had the best spots down there. But at this time, Engineering itself should be empty and she found the hum of the ships drive core rather soothing at times.

-

The room was empty, and Shepard went over to sit by the wall. The room was never empty long as Kenneth and Gabby woke up early to work on the ship, and Tali was generally busy at work, but every once and a while you could find a few moments where the room was quiet.

And it was nice. It seemed like they’d been going non-stop since they started the mission and while given the circumstances she knew that was a good thing, it also made justifying a break hard. And the nightmares didn't help. She took another drink of water as she tried to clear her mind of the images of the dream. Focusing on them wouldn't help right now. Maybe she should have brought something to distract herself with. There were always dossier's to look over after all.

Her thoughts wandered onto new topics as she sat there, listening to the drive core hum but they always found their way back to the scene in the dream she’d been having. Endless space, and gasping for air that just wasn't there.

-

“Shepard?” A familiar voice brought out of her thoughts a little while later. She looked up from staring in her cup of water to see Tali standing in front of her.

“Hey Tali.” She offered a small smile to the Quarian. “ Shouldn't you be asleep?”

“I could ask you the same thing Shepard.” Tali folded her arms but walked over to the wall where Shepard was sitting and sat next to her. “Besides, I’m the one always in Engineering, not you.”

“Couldn't sleep.” Shepard shrugged as she took another drink. “That’s all. And Engineering is a quiet place to sit.”

“Oh.” Tali fidgeted slightly. “Well if you want quiet I can leave, I didn't realize-“She stopped as Shepard put a hand on her shoulder as she tried to stand up.

“I wasn't asking you to leave Tali.” She offered a small smile with the reassurance. “I could use a distraction anyway. Keep me company?”

“Well alright, if you’re sure.” Tali seemed to relax at that, and Shepard had to smile a little more. Taking her hand away as Tali sat back down.

“So what do you think of Gabby and Kenneth? I've been meaning to ask you about them.”

As Tali started talking, Shepard had another sip of water, listening to her. And for once that night she was distracted enough that her thoughts didn't return to that moment in space.
