“I envy you,” he whispered against her skin, his stubble creating sparks by a gentle touch, which shouldn’t mean anything.
“Do you?” she asked him with a slight teasing lilt of her voice. Haymitch nodded against her neck, his cheek rough on her soft skin while a small moan nearly escaped her.
He gently kissed her then, slowly pulling against her lips, refusing to deepen it further, which meant that he was apologising for something he had not done yet.
Effie’s eyes narrowed at him suspiciously as he pulled away, this man who frequented her bed more often than not.
He shook his head as if he was clearing his thoughts before he looked at her sadly.
“Why do you envy me?”
His eyes studied her with sympathy. “You’re so ignorant, Sweetheart. You live this dream of a life that the Capitol gives you without knowing exactly who they are.”
Even though he was lightly stroking her skin gently, his words were cold. Effie pulled away from him, her gaze hard. “Do you really think that I’m that shallow?”
“No,” he said heavily. “I think you’re that naïve.”
“I’m not naïve,” she said strongly, her lips quivering with the need to hold back her emotion. Haymitch doesn’t do emotion. Hadn’t she learned this the hard way? “I know what the Capitol is. I can see it myself.”
“And yet you still wear what they wear,” he said carefully.
Effie need not have looked at the wig that was placed carefully on her vanity table. She knew what he meant. But she wasn’t going to change to prove a point for him, especially because she knew what her cause was. And her cause were the children she had to escort to their deaths.
“I think you should leave.”
And he did.
