"Did you hear what Niou-kun did? I heard he's going to be suspended because of this."
That was the brunt of the rumor going around Rikkaidai's Elementary school. It was Yanagi Renji's second day in the school, and this sounded like big news even though he didn't know who this Niou-kun was.
"I swear, he's going to get kicked out of school completely. Which is too bad because I had plans for him." Yukimura said as he picked at his lunch at his desk. Renji had turned around and was sharing Yukimura's desk for a table, Sanada sitting as his own desk pretending to not pay attention to the other two.
"Your plans are almost as bad as Niou's." Sanada said, shoveling another bite into his mouth so he wouldn't have to answer.
"I don't get caught, and mine don't usually involve property destruction. Unless it involves tennis." Yukimura said, trying to look innocent. Renji stared at him. "I'm joking, Renji."
"Who are you talking about?"
Both Yukimura and Sanada looked up from their lunches, surprised at the question. Then understanding dawned in the form of Yukimura remembering that it was only Renji's second day in their school.
"One Niou Masaharu from class 6-C. He has a bit of a destructive streak, but really he's not too bad once you get to know him. He's really fun, but he's also a bit of a prankster and has the reputation to prove it." Yukimura explained.
"Actually, he is that bad." Sanada said, apparently having a differing opinion on the matter than Yukimura did.
Renji blinked a little, confused. Renji just shrugged and ate his lunch that he did manage to remember that morning. Sanada shoved a little of his food onto Renji's bento. "You're too skinny." He declared, trying to change the subject. Their conversation moved on to tennis and other things about their coming move to middle school soon.
It was after school when Renji declined Yukimura and Sanada's invitation to spend some time with them. Kana was still supposed to walk home with him until the end of the week, and while he hated being treated like a little kid, he still technically was one.
Renji glanced at his watch again. It had been over 20 minutes that he'd been waiting for her, and he was worried since she was never this late in picking him up from anything.
"I haven't seen you around before." A rather disheveled looking kid said, looking at Renji distrustingly as he leaned back against the brick wall of the old school. Renji watched him carefully, almost thinking he was an older student, but due to his size, and the fact he was wearing the same uniform was a give away that he was most likely in the same year as Renji. "What's your name, kid?"
Renji looked at him, seriously wondering if he should introduce himself or not. Renji decided it couldn't be that bad. Certainly it wasn't the boy they were talking about at lunch. "Yanagi Renji." Renji introduced himself, and got a critical look from the other kid.
"Nice to meet you, Yana-chan." He said, grinning a grin that told Renji he realized how insulting that name sounded. "Niou Masaharu, at your service." He grinned. "School prankster. You look like you'd be fun. Come on." Niou said, pulling Renji along behind him. Renji was a bit shocked at first, stunned by first the horrible name, and secondly by the actual dragging.
"Where are we going, Niou-kun?!" Renji asked as his legs caught up with his mind, and ended up following.
"You'll see." Niou said, grinning, heading towards the junior high's tennis courts.
Renji tensed a little. "Are you sure we should be here?" He asked nervously.
"Nope. We shouldn't." Niou said, grinning. "The girls have practice today, and my sister is the girl's team fukubuchou." Niou held up a key. "And this is the key to their equipment room." He grinned as he walked along confidently as though they weren't about to do something stupid. Renji was rather shocked, but he didn't really have any thing else to do either.
Renji was speechless for a bit, then found the bags of oranges sitting behind the said equipment area. "Are you..."
"Yup." Was all Niou said as he picked up a bag in each hand. "Grab some and follow." He commanded Renji.
"Oranges?"
"Oranges, oh Renji-chan." Niou said, grinning away as he opened the room up and dumped the basket of tennis balls out, and put the oranges in instead. "They're doing serve practice."
Renji caught on to what they were doing, putting the tennis balls into the netting that had held the oranges. "Why are you doing this?"
"'Cause it's fun and keeps me busy." Niou answered, dumping the last of the oranges into the ball baskets.
"Isn't that rather rude?" Renji asked.
"A little chaos never hurt anyone, oh Renji-chan." Niou said, grinning. "Now let's get out of here before we're discovered. Just dump the tennis balls behind the building. They'll find them soon enough." He said as they finished up with the prank, looking rather proud of himself as he led Renji away from there.
Renji looked a bit exhausted as they ran further away from the school. Niou finally determined that they were safe from discovery finally, and they leaned against a nearby wall to catch their breath. Renji was the first one to speak. "You should do something productive. You're obviously smart, but why all the pranks?"
"Why not? It's fun." Niou answered, a grin easily creeping across his face. "Lighten up, Yana-chan." Renji glared from his half-lidded eyes.
"Pick a name and stick to it, Niou-kun." Renji said. "Though you've been pretty rude for having just met me."
"Nah, I'm just creative. Besides, you look like a girl, so why not Yana-chan?" He asked, perfectly straight faced. Renji just sighed.
"Alright, fine. I wouldn't be able to change your mind anyway." Renji said. "I should be going home, since nee-san isn't bothering to do her job." Just after Renji said that he remembered what she told him she was doing this afternoon. 'Renji~ I'm joining tennis club today so I can't pick you up after school, but I'm sure you know the way home by now.' Kana had told him this morning. And now Renji had just committed a crime against that said tennis club. "On second thought, I think I'm going to go hide..." Renji said, picking up his bag and heading in the opposite direction.
"Hey, I'm not cruel. I'll take the fall for it." Niou said. "I've taken the fall for many." He said, walking away.
