There were times when Kai was tempted to do something extreme to get Black’s attention, something like maybe dropping an anvil on his head or something, anything to get Black to realise just what was in front of him. Oh, sure, there was the tiny problem that Black had a thing for Shi-chan but he could work around that, given time and with enough effort. With time and effort he could get around all of the obstacles in his way, no question.

Well, there was one sticking point and unfortunately it was a major one; he had no idea if Black liked guys, or even if he’d be open to the idea, but Kai was determined to try anyway. So what if Black liked girls, there was nothing to stop him liking guys too, right? It was a conclusion he’d come to himself a few years back and he refused to limit himself to just one gender. He just… he wasn’t going to make a big deal of it to anyone he didn’t know really well, that’s all.

Sitting on his bed, absently bumping his heels against the side, Kai frowned into empty space, trying to hammer a plan together; a plan that would let him test out the waters before he made a complete idiot of himself. It wasn’t easy being nineteen, bi and in a team of very attractive people, but Black was the one that gave him the most problems; the way White’s hair fell across her face, Yellow’s grin that promised mayhem on a grand scale, Red’s easy going humour, even Silver’s ‘I am cool and mysterious’ thing, all of that he could deal with, the reaction passed quickly enough, but with Black… with Black it was much, much harder. He couldn’t just brush off the things Black did: the smiles that made him feel warm inside, the easy touches that burned even after Black wasn’t touching him anymore.

Whatever it was he was feeling around Black lately, it had gone way beyond lust - lust he knew, lust he could deal with - and it was just too, too much and it was driving him crazy; something had to be done about it. Preferably without embarrassing the hell out of himself, naturally. And preferably with no witnesses because if it went badly the last thing he’d need was Red trying to convince him everything would be fine or Yellow cackling in the background.

So. Plan. He needed a plan, a good plan, one that would get through even Black’s denseness. Maybe if he just came out and told Black he was bi and then see how it went from there. Ah, but that was easier said than done and while he doubted Black would react badly, as such, he didn’t want to make him uncomfortable or do anything that would make Black uneasy around him: that would kind of defeat the purpose after all. But maybe Black would need to freak out a little, then once that was out of the way he’d get used to the idea and everything would be fine.

The more he thought about it, the more it felt like something he had to do and a lot less about trying to figure out if Black was into guys or not. Best friends didn’t keep things - well, important things anyway (including girls you’re in love with but never mentioned before, Black) - from each other so maybe it was time he stopped hiding that particular bit of himself; if he couldn’t trust Black with it, who could he?

Kakeru watched in concern as Blue hovered outside Black’s room, pacing back and forth, clearly trying to psych himself up to something; every time he seemed to gather up the courage, though, he’d turn back to the doorway and collapse in on himself, all of the courage he’d mustered draining away in a heartbeat. Then the cycle began again. What was wrong? he fretted. This wasn’t like Blue at all and anything that could make the usually energetic GaoBlue this nervous couldn’t be a good thing.

“Come on,” Yellow murmured from just behind him, leaning against the side of the wall in a deceptively relaxed slouch. “Get it together kid, you can do it.”

Wait a minute. Did he…? “You know!” he accused, turning back to glare at the other man.

“Be quiet!” Yellow hissed, reaching over to slap him round the head. “He’ll hear you.”

Kakeru pouted, about to protest that Yellow was being hypocritical, then decided that doing so would attract Blue’s attention and whatever important thing he was trying to do wouldn’t be done. “What’s going on?” he asked instead, careful to keep his voice low. “What’s wrong with Blue?”

“If you don’t know I’m not going to tell you,” Yellow replied calmly. “Work it out for yourself, Red.”

With Yellow being so singularly unhelpful Kakeru sighed and wondered again what could possibly make Blue this nervous. Then it seemed as if he’d get some answers when Black emerged from his room, starting in surprise when he saw Blue, Blue apparently just as caught off guard by Black’s sudden appearance.

“Is everything alright?” Black asked, his features creased in concern and Blue nodded quickly, shoving his hands into his pockets and shifting his weight nervously from side to side.

“Sure. Everything’s fine. Why wouldn’t it be fine?”

“I don’t know, it just seems like something is, that’s all.”

“Well, it’s fine, everything’s just…” Blue shut up and closed his eyes briefly, gathering up any shreds of courage he could before opening them again. “Actually, Black, I need to talk to you about something, or tell you something, really, and it’s kind of important.”

“You can tell me anything, Blue, you know that,” Black replied, his confusion more than evident, as if he couldn’t understand why Blue would be nervous about telling him anything. “Is something wrong?”

“No!” Blue said hastily. “And it’s nothing bad, Black, don’t worry. Well, I don’t think it’s bad; you might think it’s a bit weird but, no, it’s not… it’s not bad, okay, I just, I really need to tell you and--”

“Blue, calm down,” Black interjected, resting his hands on Blue’s shoulders and shaking him a little, enough to snap Blue out of it. “Deep breaths.”

“Right,” Blue agreed, no doubt forcing himself to relax. “Can we do this in your room?” he suggested. “You might want to sit down or something.”

“Okay,” Black agreed dubiously, heading back into his room. Blue hesitated, clenched his hands into fists at his sides, unclenched them, then smacked himself around the head.

“Okay,” he said to himself, voice barely audible to Kakeru’s ears. “You can do this. No chickening out.”

And with that he stepped into Black’s room and out of hearing range.

“Come on,” Yellow said, tugging him away. “Let’s go.”

“But Yellow!” Kakeru protested. “We didn’t…”

“It’s a private conversation, Red,” Yellow said pointedly, not to mention unfairly considering he’d been eavesdropping as well. “Let them have it in private.”

“But--!”

“Red, leave them alone.”

About half an hour later Blue made his way into the main room of Gao’s Rock and while he wasn’t his usual irritatingly loud self he didn’t seem that down either, something Yellow was relieved to see. It obviously couldn’t have gone that badly otherwise he doubted Blue would want to be around anyone right now. Black followed him in, looking a little wild around the eyes, but just as obviously he wasn’t pushing Blue away or keeping him at arm’s length.

Well, that was just as well, because otherwise he’d have to do something about it.
