Title: Guilt
Fandom: The Painted Veil (2006)
Characters: Dr Walter Fane, Kitty Fane
Prompt: #056 - Breakfast
Word Count: 119
Rating: PG-
Summary: Walter's all caring cuddles, and Kitty feels bad.
“Breakfast, darling?” Walter called through the door.
Kitty turned over. Go away, she mouthed into the pillow. After a few moments, she sat up, and said, “Come in.”
He did, loaded with a wicker tray containing two slices of bread, a croissant - how he’d obtained that in Shanghai, she had no idea - some strawberry preserve and a pot of tea. “How are you feeling?” he asked.
Terrible. She didn’t tell him that it was her conscience, rather than her stomach, which felt bad. “A little better,” she lied.
Walter was bringing her breakfast in bed, tending to her, fussing over her like a man in love.
And all the while she was making love with another man.
Title: Trying Something New
Fandom: The Painted Veil (2006)
Characters: Dr Walter Fane, Kitty Fane
Prompt: #059 - Food
Word Count: 193
Rating: U
Summary: Walter has brought home a treat
They had been in Shanghai a month. Walter had arrived home with some food he had purchased from a stall near the lab where he worked. Kitty had made noises about wanting to try some Chinese food and he’d wanted to please her.
She was sitting at the table in the lounge when he came in, writing a letter to her sister. When he came in she looked up, and smiled. Walter’s heart lifted. Could it be that she was finally coming to adore him as he adored her?
“Can you guess what I have brought home?” he asked, setting down his hat on the hat stand by the door.
She stood and gave him a perfunctory kiss on the cheek. She was still smiling as she asked, “A little treat?”
“Several, indeed.” He took a bag from his briefcase. It was slightly greasy and contained spring rolls, some pak choi leaves, and a crab meat. He wondered if she would permit him to feed them to her. Such a thing would make his evening extremely enjoyable. “I’ll go into the kitchen for some plates,” he said, and couldn’t help grinning.
Title: I want to go back
Fandom: The Painted Veil (2006)
Characters: Dr Walter Fane, Kitty Fane
Prompt: #044 - Circle
Word Count: 112
Rating: U
Summary: Kitty doesn't feel safe.
Kitty wanted to go back to the days of her childhood, when she’d played the game of drawing a circle around herself in the sand. The line would protect her from anything. Inside the circle, no one could see her, and no one could get in.
Unfortunately, cholera would pay no attention to children’s games.
And neither she nor Walter were inoculated. She wondered why he wasn’t - did he want to prove something? Or did he just want to die?
Have I made him feel that way?
No. She couldn’t think about that. She would just go and write a letter to Charlie. That would lift her spirits.
Title: Icy

Prompt: #071 - Broken
Word Count: 50
Rating: U
Summary: Something has changed in Walter
“Interrupt me again, and I’ll strangle you,” Walter hissed.
Kitty believed him. His eyes, often so gentle and dark when he looked at her, were a cold, icy blue. She had broken something in him, and she didn’t know how to fix it.
Title: Brighter
Fandom: The Painted Veil (2006)
Characters: Dr Walter Fane, Kitty Fane
Prompt: #012 - Orange
Word Count: 94
Rating: U
Summary: Chinese fruit
The fruit in Mei-ton-fu was so much brighter and riper than any that Kitty had eaten in England. She sat at the table in their small, wooden dining room staring at the bowl their temporary housekeeper had filled. The orange that stared back at her looked fit to burst, it was so fat and round.
But she wasn’t hungry. She worried about Walter.
It made her smile. Worried. She actually cared about him. How their relationship had changed in the past few weeks! It made being here in this foreign backwater bearable.
