It was late. Walter looked up at the moon. It was a full one, waxy and high in the sky. As he stared at it, he thought of Kitty, in the bedroom, brushing her soft dark hair, and tried to think of something romantic to say.
He hadn’t said anything romantic to her yet, and they had been in Shanghai for two months already. Was she tired of him, of their life here? He noticed that she’d been a bit distracted lately. Perhaps she missed her sister.
Maybe he’d try and get her a little dog or cat, for company. Yes, yes, that would do.
Pleased, he went inside to get ready for bed.

As Walter passed the graves along the river, he closed his eyes and imagined how they had been buried. Spades moving up and over and under, tears falling, blurring vision. Bodies placed gently inside burial shrouds, prayed for, mourned over. Families trudging home, knowing an emptier house awaited.
What would I do if Kitty died?
It was a question he did not oft ask himself. But now that they had become closer, now that everything had changed, he knew that he could lose her. She was helping out in the orphanage daily now, and getting the disease was a high risk for her. She didn’t seem to mind - but was it all a brave façade?
For him, it was. He wasn’t inoculated. It was too late now, he was around these people every day. But it was scared.
Scared of dying. Scared of never seeing his home in Shanghai again. Scared of never exploring the feelings he and Kitty had awakened in each other.
