It was so quiet here.
Kitty hadn’t lived in a bustling area of England before she had come to Shanghai, but there had been the occasional noise. People. Dogs, the rumble of an automobile engine. Here, there wasn’t anything except the whistle of the wind through the trees.
She settled into her bed, her new bed, and turned the page of the book she was reading. She’d been in bed for over an hour. The door to the bedroom was closed. She wondered if Walter had gone to sleep in another room.
There was a knock on the door. Kitty swallowed. Walter. What did he want?
She frowned at her thoughts. What do you think he wants - what does any husband want of his new, young, pretty wife?
“Who is it?” she asked, trying for a playful tone.
“It’s I.” He seemed to also be trying to add a teasing note to his voice.
Kitty hesitated. She could say she was tired, or feeling ill. “Come in.”
There was a small creak as the door handle turned, and then Walter stood in the doorway, dressed in conservative white pyjamas and plain brown house shoes. Kitty studied him in the pale light that seeped in from the lounge behind him.
If she’d been asked a month ago what her husband would look like, she wouldn’t have described the man that stood before her. But here he was, hers, a doctor, and she supposed that counted for something.
