It had happened again and it hadn’t become any easier. You never got used to death. Jethro would never get used to losing a partner. How cruel was fate that he’d already had to endure it twice in his short life. Short it would always be.
He wouldn’t be leaving anything behind. His memories would be with him, wherever it was he was headed next. He only wished he would meet with his beloved girls and beloved husband there. Holding the photograph he had carried with him for the past twelve years, taken on their first night together, he said his last goodbyes then let it fall onto the fire to join the letters and postcards Ducky had written him over the years.

The wind whipped sand round the stones of the fire. The last embers dying down. No-one enjoyed the final heat; no footprints lead from the fire.
