It took me how long to catch that?

So I'm chugging along, editing/revising Wayworn, for the most part enjoying myself since the bulk of the work is already done.  (Sometimes it's nice being an edit-as-I-go kind of writer.  Not that I have much choice since a brick wall drops in front of me any time I try to move forward without making what I have the best I can at the time).  Anyway ( Read more... )

um...oops, adventures in editing, wayworn, the writing life

What's sad is I got accidental inconsistencies when I was writing A MEMOIR. For goodness sake--a memoir! But memory is a fickle thing, and I would have these realizations, that I thought about this at the time, or I found this out two weeks later but afterwards I always imagined I knew it then, etc.

LOL. I don't feel so bad anymore. ;) But you're right, memory is a tricky thing. And with hindsight being what it is, it's easy to forget that what you know you, you didn't actually know at the time it happened.

My biggest 'oops' come up when I take too long a break between writing days -- and I'll do things like change the MC's eye color or end one chapter on Monday night and start the next one on Monday morning (of the same Monday). My most common mistake is to change the last names of characters and forget all about it...

I do little things like that too. In fact, just a week or two a go I realized that I had Glen's library on the 3rd floor in chapter 2, but on the 2nd floor in chapter 3. Yep, had to fix that. In our defense, I think there's so many little and big details to keep straight that there's no way we can keep track of them all. Short of writing them down, that is. But then we have to remember to consult the list we made...

Okay since this is mostly writers reading this post and not "the readers" because they think we're perfect and write the book from cover to cover... and we are ;)

My whole plot is based off my main characters best friend who disappears and can't be found. I finished the book and forgot to have her found and come back... Opps. But I did end it with a kick ass kissing scene. So you can see why I was distracted. Note: when I wrote the ending I was REALLY sick, so there is a really good excuse. :)

Hehe. I remember that. But hey, at least you caught it before I had a chance to read it. And if you hadn't told me about it, I'd have never known. And yeah, you did get a really kick butt kissing scene at the end. *sigh*

I can't really remember, but there have been quite a few. My most memorable is that a character is alone in a great big mansion, which has been openened after around 50 years of being closed and it was in the healthiest conditions ever. *hah* :) She was there alone and it was clean and no puddles, broken windows, dust or anything and it has a majestic clean pool. It was strange.

LOL. Oops. Were you just too caught up in everything else to realize? I've done that a few times. Fortunately though, those are the ones I tend to pick up on as soon as I go back to edit. It's the ones that take me several drafts to figure out that leave me embarrassed.

Truth was that a person pointed that out to me in his crit for the short story and I actually noticed that I had let reality bend... It was a really embarrassing situation, so rest asure other people are way worse. :)

Oy! I bet that was. It makes me wonder for all the stuff I am catching, what I am still oblivious to with my own?

Timelines. I screw them up constantly. In fact, after mutiple reads and edits by numerous people, a time line screw-up still shows up in my first novel. (wow, that's the first time I ever admitted this!)

If it makes you feel any better, I never caught it. :D And thanks for sharing!
