Have any of you heard of this?

Have any of you heard about a new law going into effect next month that requires all children's clothing, toys, and books to be test for lead before they can be sold?  And apparently sale of books for children 12 and under will be banned unless they've been tested and have a lead-free certificate and that all books existing prior to this will not ( Read more... )

you've got to be kidding me!

Wow, I hope that is not the case...... :( There are a lot of kids that are going to miss reading books if that really happens.

It just seems so extreme to me. I really hope they wouldn't take it that far.

I couldn't find anything on the internet except for the article you have posted. It sounds too fantastic and hard to monitor to be true. That is really weird and I certainly hope that it's not going to happen. Just think of all the consequences!

This article is all I could find too. On the cpsc.gov website, they did mention books/cd's/dvd's being included in this new law, but I didn't see the specifics the article mentioned. And I know when I first heard about this, people were saying the law affected second-hand stuff as well and the cpsc website clarifies it saying otherwise. So my hope is that's the case with the books because I just can't stand to think of so many books being destroyed and unavailable to children and all the fall-out that would happen from it.

I know. I really hope that won't be the case and that it's all just a rumor.

Really strange. What is with this sudden panic about lead? I mean books are harmless... I do admit that Japanese toys are quite dangerous, but books?

Who knows.

It is strangely peculiar that something like that occurs. I doubt that people suddenly began to care with that much fervor you know. Lead has been an ever present thread when it comes to children and Chinese products can be really dangerous, but that is not new news. Taking this to such an extreme is puzzling and I think I sniff a conspiracy.

My hope is that while the needing to test for lead before selling children's things etc. sounds true enough, the extremes I've been hearing about are just rumors.

Yes, it's true ext_128005 January 15 2009, 22:05:54 UTC
I happened to be watching the news last week one night & they had a story about it. They said that many of the thrift store owners that they talked to hadn't even heard of the law yet & the news station provided them with information about it. They said that many places could go out of business because of it. In the news story, they even said that it would apply to eBay & Craigslist & other online places too. I don't really see how they could regulate it all though. They wouldn't really know it wasn't tested unless a problem was found. One of my transcriptionist friends said they heard that they would limit it to not selling anything made before February 2009, but I don't think that would even completely solve the problem ( ... )
