The new year is here and the 2016 season is approaching fast with People's Choice Awards and Golden Globes set for their 6th January and 10th January runs respectively, with their nominations, alongside the SAG AFTRA awards, already released days before. This means that without a doubt the 2016 World Fandom Championship is about to begin! Just after the long break prior to the end of Primetime Emmys, the days of determining the best fandom has finally come again upon us, starting with the award shows before we would finally enter the hectic month of March for some March Madness-styled fandom competitions later on.
NOMINATIONS IN A NUTSHELL
The final nominees for the PCAs have been released shortly after the preliminary voting ended, and as of this post the voting for every category has closed. Sad that I couldn't be able to vote for any of them as I have been avoiding myself to not be spoiled by the list before I try to write about them all this time, but I cannot help. Later on, nominees for
Golden Globes and much later the
SAG AFTRA Awards were also revealed.
In the movies, Avengers: Age of Ultron goes out against Furious 7 and Pitch Perfect 2 in the outright Favorite Movie category, with the first two fandoms also fighting it out in the Favorite Action Movie alongside Divergent's sequel Insurgent. This year's PCA continues the triple-rivalry saga between the Avengers series, Pitch Perfect 2 and Divergent series in the Movies category, with the absence of The Hunger Games and Jennifer Lawrence, and Fifty Shades of Grey finally making its Championship rounds after a one-off TCA appearance in the music-related category.
The TV categories will see usual suspects such as The Big Bang Theory, Game of Thrones, Grey's Anatomy and The Walking Dead vying for the outright victory in the Favorite TV Show. In addition, it also sees reigning WFC champion Person of Interest's "Sudden Death" attempt on award shows with a Favorite TV Crime Drama nomination against veterans Bones and Castle, Transparent's PCAs debut in the Favorite Streaming Series against House of Cards, The Mindy Project, Orange is the New Black and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, and showdowns of the giants in the form of resident TCAs dominator Pretty Little Liars against last year's PCA winner Rizzoli & Isles in Favorite Cable TV Drama, and Emmys dominator Game of Thrones taking on American Horror Story, Outlander, Teen Wolf, and The Walking Dead in Favorite Cable Sci-Fi/Fantasy TV Show category. New shows such as Crazy Ex-Girlfriend and Scream Queens also made it to the Favorite New TV Comedy race, while its Drama counterpart will pit Blindspot, Heroes Reborn, Quantico, and Supergirl at the same arena.
Actors-wise, Sofía Vergara has more chances of winning due to parallel nominations between Movies and Television categories here in PCAs, but taking on Shailene Woodley on the poll-based award show like PCAs will be the challenge for the said actress, taking accounts of her TCAs dominance. Other than that, it's still anyone's game.
And then there's the Music categories which is basically same-all story all around: Taylor Swift et cetera. New to this awards is the set of "Digital" categories which includes Favorite Social Media Star and Favorite Game, but I couldn't care less for the category, and finally, no Favorite TV Icon, Favorite Pairing and all that stuff this time around.
In the end, there are 84 fandoms (TV and movies combined) and 103 actors in total for the PCAs grid, but very few will be classified finishers, yet I can only imagine five to six fandoms tied together after the show ends if I were to use the WFC system.
In Golden Globes starting from the Movie honors first, the Drama contender Carol is aiming for a perfect finish with five nominations including the Best Film Drama, but its closest rivals will be Steve Jobs with a couple of Best Actor/Actress nominations and The Revenant which is also in the Best Drama race, with both movies have four nominations. The Big Short also has a bigger chance in finishing big for the Comedy categories, including the Best Comedy/Musical, and two actor nominations. Several worth-to-note moments include Swedish actress Alicia Vikander having two nominations which should give a bigger chance for the Actor's Championship finish, Jennifer Lawrence's eventual appearance, and yet another duel between Fifty Shades and Furious 7 in the Best Song category. The Television honors sees the second Golden Globe appearances for Jeffrey Tambor, Gina Rodriguez, Viola Davis, Joanne Froggatt, Uzo Aduba, and Taraji P. Henson. Emmy winner Jon Hamm even makes sure that he doesn't miss the Golden Globe moment. The Drama fandom jandal race features the most-nominated Outlander (3), the kamikaze effort of Game of Thrones, and the nth revenge of Empire, while Transparent is set for yet another Comedy domination but has to face Orange is the New Black and Veep to do so.
Last but not least for Screen Actors Guild Awards a.k.a the round that awards only the actors and the fandoms without any fuss, the movie race sees Trumbo's triple nomination with a chance of winning the outright Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture category, opposite Beasts of No Nation, Spotlight, and The Big Short which all of them have two nominations including the nomination of the same mentioned category, while Helen Mirren is the only actress to have two nominations. The Television race meanwhile has House of Cards being the one to watch, with three nominations including the outright Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series category, but not to forget Downton Abbey with two nominations including the very same nomination in an attempt to snatch the victory for the second time. The very last of Parks and Recreation is very well-represented with Amy Poehler fighting for the Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Comedy Series victory, as well as Mad Men with, you guessed it, Jon Hamm fighting against House of Cards's Kevin Spacey in the male, drama counterpart of the nomination. It's a Don Draper vs. Francis Underwood mano-e-mano!
In the end, accumulating all the efforts, Steve Jobs and The Big Short starts out with a big number of nominations in both Golden Globes and SAG, thus allowing them to have a bigger chance in scoring WFC points if they win, same case to other movies like The Revenant, The Danish Girl, Trumbo, and The Martian, while Carol has only one big shot in Golden Globes. That was for the movies; the television sees Transparent being one of the early favorites for this season's WFC, with a triple award appearance and six nominations overall. Fighting the Amazon Prime show will be the titans in the form of Game of Thrones, House of Cards, OITNB, and Veep. The Big Bang Theory meanwhile has a chance to give themselves a kick start in order to defend their Comedy Champion title with four overall nominations sans Golden Globes, and Teen Dramas such as The Vampire Diaries and Pretty Little Liars are stuck with merely one nomination in PCAs, and experts at Golden Globes and Screen Actors Guild understandably do not give a damn due to obvious reasons. The Television race will have its tables totally turned in the upcoming FMM this year, but God knows whether all of them will make it to the final bracket, especially Transparent.
WHAT TO EXPECT
The start of the 2016 World Fandom Championship season will definitely bring some Award Show goodness to play, seeing which fandoms will get the holeshot this January with PCAs, Golden Globes, and SAG Awards being the first series of destinations. Expectations grow higher to the champions of the last season, the same way hopes are grown to the newly-debuted fandoms.

Person of Interest,
the first ever World Fandom Championship champion, has made it to the awards show scene with a nomination of Favorite TV Crime Drama in PCAs, sadly Amy Acker (known for playing Samantha "Root" Groves, who is also the WFC Character's Championhip) is absent from the nominees' list. Its nomination is the equivalent of "win or die" philosophy as POI only has literally ONE chance to win in order to score points in the first round of PCAs, same with the other fandoms that also at least had one nomination. In its first awards outing, it will compete against Bones and Castle, with the latter being one of the last year's winners. Orange is the New Black is also getting the same arms race as POI, placing itself against House of Cards and The Mindy Project in Favorite Streaming Series category, but the main rival is of course the awards-favorite Transparent, which has made rounds in "more legitimate" award shows. The only problem is that OITNB, House of Cards, and Transparent has the better footing to start this season.

Furious 7 meanwhile has a bigger bid in outpacing their other movie rivals such as Pitch Perfect 2, Fifty Shades of Grey, The Avengers, and Insurgent, all of which somehow started slowly, in the name of avenging their loss last season to Pitch Perfect 2. Experts-favorite movies such as Steve Jobs and The Big Short, among others, are also starting well, giving an edge to the all-new grid for the Movies Championship. Once the season reaches further, tables can be turned like crazy, depending on which franchise is taking all the chances. Yet, their FMM appearance is somekind of trivial; will we see Fifty Shades in the bracket? Will Pitch Perfect 2 be there too? Will Divergent series finally be represented? Even an FMM appearance from an experts-favorite movie is somekind of rarity.
SUDDEN CHANGES, OMG!
Time for some bad news, ladies and gentlemen: this year's PCA race, compared to last year's, might be less than exciting, with only select fandoms getting a chance of domination, as I pointed out earlier. Alas, the double points round status for the PCAs is cancelled, and I would nominate Emmys, the final round of the championship, as the double points round, realizing that there needs to be such a round for award shows. Another nomination would be Golden Globes as it also covers the movie nominations also, and while there aren't much nominations that exist, at least both TV and Movie franchises can get their equal footing here.
Speaking of parity between TV and Movie franchises, I have added one more round: the Critics Choice Movie Awards. I had included it initially for the previous season but somehow my mind played games on me and I had to take it down for some reason. This is the Movie counterpart of the Critics Choice TV Awards, and in fact is the original Critics Choice. A total of eleven rounds will be played this season, with two of them being Critics Choice Awards dedicated to Movie and TV, meaning that this will count towards separate syndications. And by the way, I'm still looking for some March Madness-styled poll competition but with movie franchises..
A post dedicated to the new season of WFC will of course be posted at some point, I would go with posting after the SAG AFTRA Awards. This will include the new table for the 2016 season, and I promise that this table will give even more detailed award shows-scoring system and also enlists the non-classified finishers. In addition, there will be the "Entry List" sheet where you can see which fandoms, actors, and characters partake any of the championship's rounds for record keeping. Also to note is the separate championships for genres and syndications so that everything won't have to rely on the outright standings even though there would be a lot of tables to be made, and of course Constructor's Championship (TV only) will take effect starting from this season, with a twist of only two best efforts, at maximum, will be counted towards the classification, meaning that the best two fandoms originating from the same channel will have their points accumulated to the channel in question. Already being favorites for the Constructor's Champion are Netflix and HBO, but only God knows how everything will be.
Last but not least is the "Breakout Newcomer Award" competitors. The current newcomers include everyone in Favorite New TV Comedy and Drama in the PCAs, Casual, and Mozart in the Jungle. I can't spot everyone for this list, but one thing for sure is that the current title favorites are Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, Mozart in the Jungle, and Scream Queens. The list would expand anytime later, so it's anyone's race in this achievement-influential race.
A post dedicated to the new season of WFC will of course be posted at some point. Here, I would go with posting after the SAG AFTRA Awards because I will have to focus on my real life first, not to mention I don't need to pull my inner John Hindhaugh in any of these awards on Twitter. Without any fuss, I welcome YOU to the 2016 World Fandom Championship!
