WORLD FANDOM CHAMPIONSHIP - A WORLD SERIES FOR FANDOMS AND CHARACTERS

Dec 25, 2015 20:52

Finally, the true face of World Fandom Championship

Welcome to the World Fandom Championship, an utterly fictitious championship that puts TV and movie franchises, characters, ships, and actors in various events, from internet poll competitions to award shows. This is the test of how one fandom, character and actor can find the glory between the two different worlds.

After all the considerations and (once again) delays, I have decided that this project would be inspired by FIA World Endurance Championship. In fact, I chose the said championship to be the inspiration that I'm imagining all the written stuffs for this don the FIA WEC font and that the logo is a blatant copy of the championship. I know, but I can't help myself. It should've been something that represents television and movies inside the logo, but time constraints are a bitch.

The rules for this project are very simple: if you've read the previous post about the project's introduction inside the TCAs/Emmys post, you'd be familiar. Otherwise, there are two individual rules reserved for internet polls and award shows, and in each event points will be awarded based on the finishing position in one event. More detailed rules can be seen on the embed worksheet far below on this post.

But what I haven't told you extensively is the inclusion of Actor's Championship which runs the same way as the Character's Championship, only with its own set of rounds and dismisses the idea of fandom representations in contrast to the Character's Championship. Actor's Championship is also competed on all awards show rounds, but I might plan to include either FMM, ZMM, or SpoilerTV Character Cup as well, depends on a random whim that is.

Without any questioning (due to the fact that the 2016 People's Choice Awards is approaching fast - more on the next post), after recalculating all the results for the eight rounds in question for the first ever World Fandom Championship, the now-official name for the initially-named Fandom World Series project, we will see which fandom and which character will be crowned the world champion. While this is purely a fictitious concept spanning multitude tastes, it draws a line of which series has the perfect package between "the most popular" and "the best by expert's standards".

AND THE WINNER IS...

A champion's head turn; Person of Interest has definitely broke the fandom season and won the first season of World Fandom Championship. (Image: everyday-shud-be-a-holiday.tumblr)

With a perfect run of wins in both Zimbio TV Couples March Challenge and SpoilerTV Favorite TV Competition, despite marred with a first round elimination in Fandom March Madness, Person of Interest is this year's champion, closing the fandom season with a total of 37 points, compared to Orange is the New Black, the season's runner-up which competed in all rounds but only had five classified finishes with 27,5 points. It's safe to say that POI broke the fandom world starting from its ZMM victory, all the way to the SpoilerTV competitions.

The Character's Championship meanwhile crams poll competitions such as Top TV Couple, FMM, ZMM, and the SpoilerTV Character Cup into one small championship a la V8 Supercars. This one is an interesting race because just before the SpoilerTV competition, faces like Root, Peggy Carter, Emma Swan, and Shaw were awfully neck-to-neck against each other, until the competition itself runs as Root becomes the POI represent. Winning the SpoilerTV competition means that yet again POI secured another trophy in the form of, you guessed it, Character's World Championship. We could've imagined Amy Acker bringing that big trophy (unfortunately we haven't pictured how the trophy would look like, hopefully next season :p), but having Root doing so will do anyway.

As for the Actor's Championship, it was far from my expectations: I would bet either Jennifer Lawrence or Shailene Woodley winning it, but after a series of events spanning PCA, Golden Globes, SAG Awards, Critics Choice, TCA, and Emmys, Frances McDormand, known for her Olive Kitteridge main role, is the Actor's World Champion, courtesy of her consistent performance in SAG Awards, CCAs, and Emmys. The top 3 is even dominated with the "quality" actors like Jeffrey Tambor and Julianne Moore, while teen sweethearts Shailene Woodley and Jennifer Lawrence ended in fourth and fifth respectively, but note that Julianne and Shailene tied with 18 points. In the end, the maximum number an actor would be classified in this championship is three.

As for the Genre champions, I use the outright classification and identify which fandom is the best in its category. Both POI and OITNB secured Sci-Fi/Fantasy and Drama (a.k.a the Overloaded Genre) victories respectively, but right behind them are also the genre champions: The Big Bang Theory for Comedy, which has even more classified finishes than OITNB has, and The Vampire Diaries for Teen, whose Top TV Competition victory thankfully gave them an edge against its closest rival Pretty Little Liars. Finally, the Animated shows champion goes to The Simpsons, only ended with six points courtesy of its outright victory in People's Choice Awards. Still in the same genre, favorites like Bob's Burgers and Archer are way behind them with both scoring four points.

The champions for Syndication champions also work the same way as determining the Genre champions, but this time I also use the general knowledge of which shows belong to which channel and what kind of channel it is. Again, POI (CBS) and OITNB (Netflix) are the champions in Network and Cable/Premium championships respectively. Meanwhile for Movies, the third and the last for this sub-championship, Veronica Mars won. I know that in the SpoilerTV competition Veronica Mars competed as a finished TV show but nonetheless the Veronica Mars legacy goes on and its FMM eligibility and flexibility really fits the mold.

Last but not least is the Breakout Newcomer Award, a special award that awards the debuting fandom that has made waves throughout the rounds presented in the WFC. Sort of models.com top newcomers, but with a twist and STRICTER standards. Top nominees include Person of Interest and Agent Carter, but yet again POI has set the most influence this year in its first year of fandom season outing, despite the show itself has been started way before.

The full results can be seen on the following embed worksheet below, but if you prefer a fully-sized one, I've got you covered:

FUTURE PROSPECTS

For the next upcoming season, I have already prepared what kind of things that should be put to the project, one of them is a double points round for an award show too. Without any doubt, the upcoming People's Choice Awards is the most fitting candidate of all, seeing it blurs the line between award show and polling competition with worldwide following, making it a free-for-all battle between fandoms*. This will swap one of the competitions' double points round status between FMM and ZMM, but this leads to a further decision because simply I am torn between these. On one side, FMM is a pride battle between 64 chosen fandoms exclusive only on LJ, while the another (ZMM) is a global battle between ships with a chance of fandoms bringing more than one representative.

Another one is the individual "small competitions" for genres, syndications, and of course actors, because the competition is pretty much fandom-centric. For genres, like I said, the champions are simply taken off of the outright standings, so the next season will see a competition for individual genres, same story with syndications and "constructors" which, unlike the others, will measure the milestones for the channels although it will be limited only to TV franchises. The Constructor's Championship is a long time plan though it is would be a complex matter altogether, hence you don't see that on this year's running.

Another suggestion would be the "small competitions" reserved for award shows and polling competitions, just like in V8 Supercars where it has separate championships for its sprint and endurance races, considering that the calendar has a balanced amount of rounds for the two disciplines in question.

* = Apparently, the 2016 People's Choice Awards nominations seemed to prevent any domination from one fandom so I guess I won't use the Double Points on PCAs, but I might consider Emmys to be one.

FINAL TIDBITS

In the end, it's been a crazy 2015 Fandom Season. While I'm looking forward for the promising 2016 season, I might not write recaps for award shows in a recap-style but instead more of a personal view as I have already introduced several elements required for this project to commence, and I might keep Roar to FMM for myself. Instead, I will write several deeper analysis of an individual fandom or posting my binge-watching experience. Save for FMM and ZMM though as both are the main events for the fandoms, which I will write their recaps in one single post. The 2016 season is approaching fast with People's Choice Awards and Golden Globes set for their 6th January and 10th January runs respectively, and with their nominations released already (along with SAG AFTRA awards), I will write more about them in the next post.

As for fan fictions and stuff, I haven't had a feeling of starting one. Still, I would make one someday, but for now I am focusing on my game site redesign and finals week, as well as an internship program.

In the end, I will find a way to bag and tag all the Renautas Corporation people like crazy.
