FANDOM EXPOSITION, The Park, All Day Saturday (8:00 - 23:00)

Aug 06, 2016 11:04

Where had the staff come from? Nobody knew. But sometime at six in the morning, a group of people arrived in the park and immediately spread out over the premises, constructing a bunch of nondescript stands at a rapid pace. They set out cheap soft drinks on the picnic tables, put up some large banners, cleaned the place up and scared off a few ( Read more... )

Well, this looked like fun. Hannibal loved a challenge, cooking for people, and people-watching.

Besides, every outdoor festival needed food, didn't it?

Hannibal was here to provide.

Taleggio flatbread
Grilled cheese and short rib sandwiches with pickled caramelized onions and arugula
Grilled brie and pear sandwiches
Devils on horseback
Gruyere and parmesan beignets
Sweet and savory orange cumin shortbread
Fried herbed almonds
Vanilla curry cotton candy
Lavender macarons with lavender-infused chocolate ganache

Honey rosemary lemonade
Italian sodas: almond, pomegranate, or basil-blueberry
And very good coffee.

Cassidy could slouch at his stand for a long time, he really could, but eventually the smell of food brought him out and wandering. And wander he did, all the way up to the gourmet food stands, long sleeves pulled over hands that were also shoved into his pockets, hoodie over his head and a set of aviators perching on his nose.

"'lo, chef," he said, in merry Irish brogue. "What's all this then? I didn't know they broke out the Michelin stars for this sort of gathering."

Hannibal grinned. "I'll break out my stars at the least opportunity." He held out his hand. "Doctor Hannibal Lecter. I don't believe I've seen you around here before."

"Ah, haven't been here," Cassidy confirmed, as he gave Doctor Hannibal Lecter a firm shake with a sleeve-covered hand. (He wagered Hannibal would not want a flaming handshake.) "Just sort of woke up here." He gestured towards a nearby bush. "Somewhere over there, like. Wouldn't be the first time. Well, would be the first time here, just not waking up in strange places in general. At least I didn't fall out of an airplane this time, am I right?"

Hannibal raised an eyebrow at that, and at the covered hand. "Falling out of an airplane seems an unpleasant way to experience new places, yes. But in that case, welcome to Fandom island. It does tend to kidnap people from time to time, but it's mostly benevolent."

"Aren't most islands that kidnap people?"

Cassidy did not sound very thrown by that.

"I take it you're a bit more familiar with the particulars, chef. Looks bloody French from where I'm standing, that's about all I've got."

"This is the only island of that sort I've encountered, so I couldn't say."

Hannibal nodded at the food. "Largely French or French-influenced, yes. Can I interest you in any of it?"

[Have to go out, so SP for a bit?]

"I meant the island, not the food," Cassidy clarified. "But the food looks lovely. What's that, with the bacon bits?"

"Ah, yes." Hannibal nodded. "I'm not entirely certain how it ended up...well, in Baltimore, generally, but the architecture is decidedly French, even if the island itself isn't."

He smiled. "And those are known as 'devils on horseback'. Medjool dates, asiago cheese, and homemade bacon."

"Now that sounds proper fancy. I'll have me some of those. Anything else you recommend?"

Cassidy looked at the spread. Then he looked up at the castle. Then he looked back down at Hannibal.

"So this kidnapping thing," he added, conversationally. "You reckon it's the French government? 'Cos I've met me some government types lately..."

Hannibal chuckled as he got out a plate and started plating the dates. "It's not any government; the island works only on its own behalf. As to other things, I recommend all of it, of course; anything else that looks good to you should work well with these."

"You've got sandwiches. I like a good sandwich, myself," Cassidy said, "Though a bit easy on the French cheeses, perhaps. Since the government isn't watching and all that."

He waved vaguely with one besleeved hand. "So what's it like, living on an isle with a mind of its own?"

Hannibal set about making one of the shortrib and cheese sandwiches. "I find it to be quite interesting, if occasionally frustrating. Being turned into a child or a woman for a weekend isn't so bad, but losing your memory for a weekend is annoying."

Particularly when you missed another wedding because of it.

"Wait, are you tellin' me you woke up some weekend with great big honking knockers?"

Cassidy had to check.

"No," Hannibal said, giving Cassidy a bit of a look. "I had rather reasonably sized breasts. But I was definitely in a female body."
