Fandom High 20 Year Reunion Brunch, The Park, Sunday Morning

May 29, 2016 04:15

Hopefully, everyone still had a little socialization in them yesterday after the mixer. There was still plenty of Tamsin's booze reserves to be shared, which would go nicely with all of the breakfast foods being served.

Each of the tables had a pot of coffee as well, just in case that was needed. There was no glitter in the coffee, promise.

Honestly, Rufus was beginning to suspect that he enjoyed her company if only for blunt statements like that.

They were refreshing.

And hilarious.

"Not quite," Rufus said dryly. "Like growing up, the process of withering away with age takes us a while. There's a number of years between my age and my being old enough to die of natural causes."

"Natural causes," Peridot echoed, squinting a little. "What kind of causes do humans consider natural?"

All told, the idea of withering just sounded disgusting.

It was a rather accurate term though!

"As we age our processes break down or fall apart," Rufus said, leaning back in his chair. "A natural death would be due to a vital process failing."

"That... sounds like a terribly flawed design," Peridot noted. "And humans haven't found a way to work around those flaws yet?"

You'd think they'd make that a priority. Honestly, now.

"What clod was responsible for that?"

"Evolution," Rufus said dryly. "And no, it has not been rectified yet. If you find a way to do so, please, let me know."

He'd be interested.

"Maybe I'll have time to work on it while I'm here," Peridot mused. "Though human bodies are obviously very different from Gem bodies. Perhaps some manner of storage unit, not unlike our Gem, to protect your human mind, with a hard-light projector to provide you with a body that behaves similar to ours..."

She was a certified Kindergartener. She didn't know her way around human anatomy yet, but she was trying to think of ways to make them that much more like Gems. There had to be a way.

For science.

"You have a storage unit for yourself?" Rufus inquired.

"No, I am myself," Peridot replied, waving at her face (and the Gem located on it, though vaguely), as if that explained it all. "But humans are a much more physical species than Gems, being organic as you are. Of course you'd want something to encase whatever part of your dangerously squishy anatomy houses your primary thought processes."

"That would be appreciated, yes," Rufus said mildly. "But, in any case, it appears that most people around the island have... aged over the last two days. They're further along in their life cycles than they were."

"And it doesn't usually happen this suddenly?"

Peridot had to check. Twenty years might as well be a day for her. She was even looking around, now, trying to see if she could spot the differences.

"No," Rufus said. "It usually takes rather longer than two days."

"Well, that's... concerning?"

Yeah, Peridot still had to check.

"Unlikely," Rufus said. "I expect it is some quirk of the island that will pass. The history of this place is rife with such occurrences."

He frowned slightly.

"I haven't aged."

Peridot considered that statement for a moment, tilting her head at him.

"Maybe in the future, you put an end to your... withering."

Considering she was already considering ways to go about doing something like that, it didn't seem completely unreasonable a suggestion.

"It's possible," he allowed.

It was possible.
