Fandom High 20 Year Reunion Brunch, The Park, Sunday Morning

May 29, 2016 04:15

Hopefully, everyone still had a little socialization in them yesterday after the mixer. There was still plenty of Tamsin's booze reserves to be shared, which would go nicely with all of the breakfast foods being served.

Each of the tables had a pot of coffee as well, just in case that was needed. There was no glitter in the coffee, promise.

"A little," Peridot agreed, not even bothering to hide her pride. "I obtained some Earth study materials, and I've been working with those at every possible opportunity."

... She'd unintentionally stolen an ABC workbook. After Gratuity pointed out that the library was a good place to go for books that didn't need to be paid for, she had returned the workbook with absolutely no fanfare and had gotten herself a book that she had been given permission to take.

She'd then lost four solid days trying to decode all of the words and their meanings, without so much as pausing to take a break.

"Very good," Rufus said. "You'll find things will make more sense to you once you can look them up in the dictionary."

Possibly. It might only confuse her more.

The great thing about a dictionary was that if she didn't understand a word in a definition, she could look that up, too. And they had guides to pronunciation!

"... In a what."

Sigh, Peridot.

Oh gods.

"A dictionary," he said, rather mildly, all things considered. "It's a compendium of words and their definitions."

...

"I need one."

Yes, Peridot. Yes you very much did.

"They would have these... dictionary... at the 'library' building that the Gratuity mentioned to me?"

"Yes," Rufus said, nodding slightly. "Or you could buy one so that you never had to return it, from the book store."

Which he worked that, funnily enough.

"With..." Peridot squinted as she tried to remember the word that Gratuity had used. "... Money?"

Yeah, she had a whole lot of none of that.

"Money is generally useful in buying things," he observed, not surprised that she didn't have any. "But come by the bookstore any way."

"I can do that," Peridot decided. "I've noticed that many of the buildings in town are only functional during specific periods when the sun is visible in the sky. Would I be correct in assuming that the bookstore has the same limitations?"

Because of humans and that weird need to sleep?

Yes. Weird.

"You would be correct with that assumption," Rufus said agreeably. "But the book shop is open on Wednesdays and Fridays. You could come after your class about super villainy."

"I could," Peridot agreed, thoughtfully. "And maybe I will..."

Yes. Yes, this was an excellent plan that could in no way end poorly!

It could surely only end well!

Rufus just nodded. What? Flat out tell her he worked there? Why would he do that? He hadn't hid it, so if she didn't notice it was on her.

"I wonder if there's anything on events like this one there," he said thoughtfully. "Everyone is older than they were."

Except him. He wasn't.

"Older," Peridot echoed, frowning as she looked around. "How do you mean?"

The concept of aging really didn't apply to somebody who came into life fully formed and who didn't change, physically, without making a conscious decision to do so.

Rufus wondered if this was worth trying to explain to her.

"What do you know of organic life cycles?" he asked, and waved a seat. "You might as well sit."

This might take a while.

Peridot considered that for a moment, and then nodded and took a seat.

"They're short," she supplied. "Laughably short compared to a Gem's life. Humans come into the world after practically no time at all, small and weak, but mature rapidly, into a complete specimen, like yourself." She shrugged. "Then they die?"
