After taking care of Effy (who was now a kitten), Alex found himself out for a smoke in the park. He had to do a double take when he spotted Rose because he hadn't seen her in so long.

"I'm not hallucinating, am I?" he asked, deciding that could be his greeting.

"Congrats," Alex said sincerely. "That's what you wanted, right? Do your thing with Lissa? Things are okay, then?"

She nodded, giving him an oddly shy smile. "Yeah. It's - kinda cool. Except for having to take econ exams."

"Econ?" Alex repeated. "You have to go to school and do the guard stuff? How does that work? Same classes?"

"Easiest way to stay close to her," Rose agreed. "I'm her near guard. No one's going to think a teenage best friend is a bodyguard, right?" She shrugged. "No one who didn't go to Fandom anyway. I've got a partner, but he does the far guarding stuff mostly, watches the perimeter, that sort of thing."

"And how is your hot friend?" Alex asked, smirking. "Still hot?" Single?"

"Hotter than ever," she smirked back. "And single but being an idiot about it. Why? You wanna set her up with someone?"

"How does one be an idiot about being single?" Alex asked curiously. "And no, I'm not a goddamn matchmaker. I was just asking after her because I am a friend from afar."

Rose rolled her eyes. "By being crazy in love with her ex and refusing to do anything about it?" Not that that sounded like anyone else we knew, no. "You'd look good in a babushka though...maybe consider the career?"

"What is a...babushka?" Alex asked, raising an eyebrow. "Sounds like an incredibly foreign sex toy."

"Or like a headscarf thing that old Russian ladies wear," she replied, snorting with laughter. "Sorry, never saw any foreign sex toys when I was in Russia."

"Never?" Alex asked, mock gasping. "And why not? That's just a failure on your part. I bet they have all sorts of contraptions with levers and pulleys and shit."

Never was probably the wrong word for it, huh? Getting her ass kidnapped and addicted to Strigoi blood probably qualified as pretty kinky under some definitions. "Yeah, I think they go in for way more pain than I'm into," she managed.

"Next time," Alex said lightly, nodding. "Not that I've been really into sex toys and shit lately either. Despite there being a sex shop in town, I've been in there once and haven't needed to go back. I make due."
