The Perk, Sunday Afternoon

Jun 06, 2010 11:27

There was only so much camping, even in cabins (which did make it more bearable), that she could take. Too many people around, too many noises and an absolute lack of true privacy ( Read more... )

Peter was far too young to be a daily coffee drinker, but apparently it was through the bitter morning drink that he fueled his sarcasm.

He gave a friendly half-wave to the girl he recognized after picking up a healthy sized cup of joe from the counter, and even walked over.

"I take it you're from somewhere that doesn't believe in Sunday as a day of rest," he greeted. "Because I've got a feeling that isn't solitaire."

She arched her eyebrows at him.

"Most assuredly, it is not," Rosalind said mildly. For her. "Are you spending your Sunday at rest?"

"I'm working my way up to it," Peter joked. "Then again, I didn't wake up until eleven, so that's probably a pretty good start at the rest business."

"Only if you don't do it every day," Rosalind allowed. "Or laziness becomes a habit."

A pause.

"Sit," she ordered, with a glance at the chair. "So you stop hovering."

Jake wasn't big on coffee. Not that he hated it, he just didn't need it in the large quantities that some people did. So no, he wasn't there to pick up a cup of coffee. He'd just been on his way back from swimming (and he was already thinking of turning right back) when he noticed a familiar face when he passed The Perk.

He almost walked on, then abruptly changed course and entered the coffee shop before he could change his mind. "Hey."

As she'd been focused on her typing, she hadn't particularly noticed him until he'd entered.

Rosalind's eyebrow twitched up. She was beginning to wonder if he ever wore clothing entirely.

"Jacob," she said coolly. Not rudely, no, but calling her greeting 'welcoming' would've been a stretch.

It was hot! Unlike her greeting, not that he was going to argue.

"I'm not going to do anything," he promised, holding up his hands in a sign of peace. "I just..." Oh man, he sucked at this. He just needed to take a deep breath and continue. "I'm sorry. I didn't mean to freak you out. I'm not some sort of creep and I wouldn't hurt you. Or anyone else. Sometimes I just forget, it's kind of easy to forget here. So yeah, I'm sorry and it won't happen again."

So some of that made only sense to him, but his mouth was working on its own accord.

...

Rosalind's expression remained on 'neutral' but...

"That's quite an apology for attempting to get ash on my face," she said very very dryly. A tiny hint of amusement in her eyes. "Or for startling me."

Elena was completely over camping. Gathering around the fires at night to gossip, that part was nice. Being hot and sticky and out in the woods? Less so.

She stopped in for some much-needed coffee and air conditioning, hesitating when she spotted her sister. Run up and hug her? Flee? Run up and hug her, then flee?

She leaned against the counter and waved. That was a start.

Rosalind was most certainly not going to return that wave. Why was Elena waving at her?

"Elena," she responded, lifting her voice to be just loud enough to be heard over the noise of the place.

But definitely no waving. First knocking and then waving? More to think about and Rosalind frowned slightly as she saved the report she'd been working on.

The counterperson handed Elena her coffee, which was a nice distraction for her. Pay, and take it, and -- go sit down at her sister's table. Why not?

"Work?" she asked, nodding to the laptop.

She wasn't going to ask if Rosalind was sweltering, in that suit. Reno never took his off, either.

She certainly didn't look sweltering and even if she had been Rosalind would not have been inclined to admit it.

Admitting it was losing half the battle, really.

"Nothing more than a weekly report," she said, with a faint smile for her sister. "It can wait."

It wasn't due until six anyway and she was mostly just proofing it now.
