Tony Stark is actually probably one of my favorite Marvel characters. Sure, he's a rich arrogant bastard with a history of alcoholism, but the key is that he has layers under that. He's also got a ton of self-worth issues, and even if he fucks up something big time, he still wants to do the right thing.
He kind of was a rich, arrogant bastard and a womanizer.
But he did work hard for his business so I can't hold the 'rich' against him, cared about his inventions, started trying to right his wrongs.
After a while I felt RDJ (I don't think anyone else could of done it) turned the arrogance into charm. He was just humorous. When the movie started out I didn't like Tony, but by the end I loved him.

Liking Tony Star is more than just having a fetish for closet woobies. He's a bastard and he admits it, but he's trying to change. Look at the way he started treating Pepper and withdrew from weapons design after he returned from Afghanistan in the movie. He disagrees with Captain America on a lot of things in the comics (and that's another can of worms), but he never loses respect for Cap because Tony knows that they're both trying to do the right thing, the just have different ideas of what that is.
Tony's always fucked up and hurt himself and others, but he's always made serious efforts to atone for it. Changing yourself is a lot hard and humbling. Tony could insulate himself with alcohol and personal assistants and be corporate king of the world, but instead he's taking responsibility, sobering up and fixing his own damn mess. I can't think of any comic book character I respect more.
...Nu!Kirk* and Tony are similar archetypes, that is, asshole with a heart of gold. I didn't say they were the same, I said people liked them for the same reasons.
I was afraid you were going to say this, actually TOS!Kirk is a lot more similar to both comic and movie Tony.
Tell me, what did Kirk do that was asshole-ish? Hit on a girl and fight back when he was punched in the face? Are you really going to call cheating on a test (that clearly didn't hold much academic weight as it was a guaranteed fail) and rebelling against an abusive father "asshole" behavior? Or maybe it's when he was sure that the galaxy was in danger (and was right) and did everything in his power to save billions of lives.
Nu!Kirk was assertive. He was proud, confident and hardheaded but he was not an asshole

Oh, Marvel...
Hugh Jackman smells real nice though. I have reason to know this. I prefer to make my own reality.

I feel that there is never a wrong time to post this.

Also possibly Dean Winchester. Though it hurts my heart to admit it.

Yeah, okay, Tony Stark is just like Jim Kirk.

(*Can't speak for Old!Kirk as I've not seen TOS.)
