Dorm roof, Tuesday afternoon

May 24, 2016 13:23

It was a particularly gorgeous day out, and Tip didn't have any classes or work or anything she needed to get done. She did have a care package from home, full of snacks from Mom's current grocery store (which included basically anything that would stand up to being dipped or coated in dark chocolate), a case of birch beer, and the world's ugliest ( Read more... )

Having spent the morning wandering through the preserve, Dipper headed to the roof with his notebook to transfer his final notes to his journal. He shouldn't have been surprised to see someone else up here but he was just a tiny bit.

"Oh. Hi!" he said with a little wave. "Mind if I hang out up here?"

"It's a free country," Tip said automatically, then blinked. "I mean, probably. Is Fandom still the US?"

"Technically I think we're in space but I'm not going to argue constitutional law," Dipper said taking a moment to think about Tip's question. "I'm going with basic human freedom. Thanks! I'm Dipper by the way."

"Gratuity," Tip said. "Want some chocolate covered . . . stuff? Mom sent me kind of a lot of it." She held out the box of chocolate covered edamame. "It has varying degrees of pretend healthiness."

Lucille had decided to escape to the dorm room to enjoy the weather and the novel she was reading. She had expected privacy, and considered leaving when she saw that she would not be alone. She recognized Tip from class though, and she had seemed clever enough. Perhaps a conversation wouldn't be entirely pointless.

"Good afternoon," she greeted the other girl.

"Hi," Tip said, also recognizing Lucille from class. "How's it going? Want some chocolate covered snacks?"

She had more than enough to spare. Tip's mom was reacting to their separation by overdoing it on the comfort foods.

Lucille did have a sweet tooth. "Thank you," she said. "I would very much like to try them. And I'm sorry that I don't remember your name from class."

"Gratuity," Tip said, passing over the box with its various moddable chocolate covered things. "You're Lucille, right?"

She'd always been pretty good at names. The ones she had the physiology to pronounce, anyway.

Ringo had spent a good chunk of the day on AirTrek rides through town. And while she was now physically exhausted, she really felt like she hadn't gotten enough of the weather so she'd headed up to the roof, hair still disheveled from all the exercise, and the first thing she did was turn her face upward and close her eyes to just sort of soak up the sun and let the wind tug at her.

Tip smiled, watching Ringo enjoy the weather. "Gorgeous out, huh?"

"Yeah," Ringo agreed softly. She took a deep breath, then let it out and looked over at Tip with a grin. "Like summer's here, but not the super-hot and gross part of summer, you know?"

She walked over to stand by Tip at the edge of the roof and enjoy the view.

"You get used to those parts," Tip said, holding out her container of chocolate covered edamame to offer Ringo some. "Mostly by hiding inside when the humidity goes through the roof. I mean, assuming that the weather stays mid-Atlantic-y, and doesn't go all space on us."

Peridot had gotten herself an aid for her one big goal while she was stuck on the island.

That was to say, she'd gotten herself a book of ABCs. And by 'gotten,' she'd walked into the Turtle and Canary, had asked for assistance finding something that could help her in her quest to master this particular written language, and had walked out again with her prize without even considering that she might have to pay for it.

Ah well.

Now she was making her way up to the roof with the book in hand, squinting at the pages. The first letter was for... some manner of human flying machine. The second was for a... smallish Earth creature with leathery wings. The third was for... one of the Earth vehicles with the four round appendages...

In hindsight, she thought, squinting as she paced back and forth across the rooftop, this acquisition would have been far more useful if she had any idea what any of those images were meant to represent.

"Look at you," Tip said, smiling as she watched Peridot pace for a few moments. "You've got yourself a book."

Peridot glanced up from her... attempt at reading... to look at Tip with thinly-veiled frustration on her face.

"Apparently so," she agreed. "I'm told it's meant to be a teaching aid for those wanting to learn how to read your language. Just match the pictures up with the word, and that's meant to help you associate the sounds with the letters. But," and she gave the book a shake, "I'm not familiar with anything in the pictures, either!"

Just that a lot of those things seemed to be flying. The machine, the hairy mammal thing, a human with some manner of cloth attached to his shoulders...

Tip twisted around on the roof edge so she was sitting crosslegged, facing Peridot. "That's no good," she said. "Maybe we need to make one for you, specifically? Draw some stuff you already know what is to represent each letter. I could tell you what they are, but it'll probably be easier if you're not trying to learn both the letters and the earth things at the same time."

It'd been easier with J.Lo. He'd had a whole ESL thing going on, but he'd had pre-invasion training. His grammar was occasionally hilarious, but his vocabulary wasn't bad at all.

Jalian was coming up to sunbathe (starbathe?), and sighed when she saw the roof occupied. That meant she had to keep her clothing on.

Still, she nodded at the girl. "Hello."

Tip definitely appreciated the keeping on of clothes. Even if she didn't know that their removal was a possibility.

"Hey," she nodded back. "No knives this time, huh?"

In answer, Jalian pulled the large knife (still sheathed) from the small of her back. "Only this one. They are already sharpened. I came to enjoy the sun."

Yup, that was still really disconcerting.

"Good," she said. "It's a nice one, today." She tilted her head. ". . . Which is admittedly a nice trick, since we're no where near our actual sun right now."
