Dorm roof, Tuesday afternoon

May 24, 2016 13:23

It was a particularly gorgeous day out, and Tip didn't have any classes or work or anything she needed to get done. She did have a care package from home, full of snacks from Mom's current grocery store (which included basically anything that would stand up to being dipped or coated in dark chocolate), a case of birch beer, and the world's ugliest ( Read more... )

Jalian was coming up to sunbathe (starbathe?), and sighed when she saw the roof occupied. That meant she had to keep her clothing on.

Still, she nodded at the girl. "Hello."

Tip definitely appreciated the keeping on of clothes. Even if she didn't know that their removal was a possibility.

"Hey," she nodded back. "No knives this time, huh?"

In answer, Jalian pulled the large knife (still sheathed) from the small of her back. "Only this one. They are already sharpened. I came to enjoy the sun."

Yup, that was still really disconcerting.

"Good," she said. "It's a nice one, today." She tilted her head. ". . . Which is admittedly a nice trick, since we're no where near our actual sun right now."

"I do not know how this works," Jalian confessed. She took off her jacket and lay it with her knife, then pulled off her boots, leaving her in small shorts and a halter top, and stretched out on the roof. "It is very strange."

"Not a lot of space travel in the far flung future, huh?"

Jalian's didn't sound like a super space-faring culture, but then, neither did the Gorg, on the surface.

"The Corvichi travel space as well as timelines. Ken Selvren do not, no. But this is...strange, anyway." How could it be sunny without a sun?

Magic. The answer was magic.

"Don't know. Something built into the dome that holds in the atmosphere, probably."

"Probably," Jalian agreed. "It would still be nice if it made sense."

"You and my friend J.Lo," Tip said. "Are you an engineer, too?"

Jalian frowned. "I know mechanics, and Corvichi physics." She shrugged. "I don't know if that makes me an engineer."

"Do you make things? With the stuff you know?"

"I can," Jalian agreed. "If I have the right parts."

"Then you're an engineer," Tip said decisively. "Engineers use science and math to make things. Simple as that."

It was slightly more complicated than that, actually. But only slightly.

Jalian nodded. "Then I am, yes. And your friend J.Lo is one, too?"

"Yup. He worked as one for the invasion force. That's why he's got lots of useful tools."

To make belts full of self-inflating safety cushions, for instance. Which Tip thoroughly appreciated now, thanks to Peridot's experiments in Earth-lifeform flight capabilities. Though she still wasn't sure why J.Lo had just randomly decided to send her a belt full of alien airbags.
