Bobby was making cookies. Well, Bobby was trying to make cookies. He'd never actually done it before. Mom didn't really approve of refined sugar or butter, and no one could say that cookies without sugar or butter were any good.

So Bobby had found a really handy recipe right on the back of a bag of chocolate chips, and baking was just like ( Read more... )

"Exactly what are you trying to kill?" Jake asked, because he was hearing a lot of noise but not so much with the deliciously smelling results.

"Why would I try to kill something in the kitchen?" Bobby asked, frowning up at Jake as he beat the butter some more. "I mean, I guess it's easily cleanable, but if I really wanted to kill something - which I don't cause I'm not very good at that - I think I'd do it outside."

"So why are you making enough noise to sound like you're killing something?" Jake asked with a grin. It wasn't his fault he had sensitive hearing.

"You're supposed to beat it and then it's supposed to be creamy!" he said indignantly. How dare the butter not comply? Bobby tilted the bowl towards Jacob. "Does it look creamy to you?"

(No, the answer was no.)

"Should I be standing next to the fire alarm in case you set the common room on fire?" Alex asked, wandering into the room and laughing. "Or maybe you've warned the local fire department already and they're on standby?"

"The oven isn't even on yet!" he protested then frowned suddenly. "Do you think I should call the fire department? I don't plan to set anything on fire. I think if I follow the directions, it should be safe."

"Have you ever baked cookies before?" Alex asked, coming over to see what Bobby had managed to do yet. "I'm pretty confident in your ability to follow instructions but...what if you slip up and add lighter fluid instead of flour?"

"No. I don't think I'm doing it right either. It's not creamy," Bobby said, pouting a little at his 'cookies.' "But even I know flour isn't liquid."

It wasn't Rilla's floor, but she couldn't help popping her head in when she saw a boy trying to cook.

"What are you making?"

"Um." Bobby looked doubtful of his potential baking abilities. "I was making cookies. But I don't know how to make the sugar creamy."

He was so lucky Rilla had taken a few courses at this point and wouldn't reply with "add milk."

"Did you add butter?" she asked, trying to peer into his bowl.

Instantly the bowl was tilted towards her so she could see. "I added butter and eggs like the instructions said. But the butter is hard and it doesn't mix. I thought it was all supposed to mix?"
