2nd Floor Common Room - Saturday Evening

Bobby was making cookies. Well, Bobby was trying to make cookies. He'd never actually done it before. Mom didn't really approve of refined sugar or butter, and no one could say that cookies without sugar or butter were any good.

So Bobby had found a really handy recipe right on the back of a bag of chocolate chips, and baking was just like ( Read more... )

"Should I be standing next to the fire alarm in case you set the common room on fire?" Alex asked, wandering into the room and laughing. "Or maybe you've warned the local fire department already and they're on standby?"

"The oven isn't even on yet!" he protested then frowned suddenly. "Do you think I should call the fire department? I don't plan to set anything on fire. I think if I follow the directions, it should be safe."

"Have you ever baked cookies before?" Alex asked, coming over to see what Bobby had managed to do yet. "I'm pretty confident in your ability to follow instructions but...what if you slip up and add lighter fluid instead of flour?"

"No. I don't think I'm doing it right either. It's not creamy," Bobby said, pouting a little at his 'cookies.' "But even I know flour isn't liquid."

"Why didn't you get just the ready made dough that you just have to squeeze out of the tube and drop on the plate?" Alex wondered.

He made a face. "That seemed like cheating. I don't wanna make cheating cookies."

"Cookies are cookies," Alex said, raising an eyebrow. "Would it really make a difference to anyone but you? At least those you wouldn't be in the situation of possibly fucking up, right?"

"Well, yeah," Bobby admitted. He made a face. "But...I didn't want to go down to T&C and there wasn't any in the refrigerator."

"Okay, so what's wrong with these cookies?" Alex asked, glancing down at he bowl. "Fill disclosure, I am not a fucking baker but maybe I can help."

"See, I really thought you were a baker," Bobby shot back, making a face. "It's why you always wear those chefs hats."

He sighed and tilted the bowl towards Alex. "The instructions say you're supposed to beat the butter and the sugar until it's creamy. But I've been beating and beating and how is sugar supposed to get creamy? It's grainy."

"Isn't there supposed to be a liquid or something to soften it up?" Alex wondered, taking a guess. "Like milk or water or something? Butter and sugar together is never gonna get creamy on its own."

"I don't think so," he replied doubtfully. Bobby reached for the recipe. "You're supposed to add eggs after it gets creamy."

"You could always put in the microwave?" Alex suggested, proving he wasn't a baker. "Wouldn't that melt it down and make it creamy? Heat and stuff, right? I don't think it'd hurt."

"Maybe if you did it for a really short time? I don't think you're supposed to melt the butter or the instructions would say," he pondered. Obviously the recipe was written by God for it must be perfect.

"The only other way I know of for something to get smooth and creamy is to add some water or milk," Alex suggested, shrugging. "Or we could add beer!"

"We're not adding beer!" Bobby protested. "It's illegal and it'll taste bad!"
