Trouble with being six, rather than sixteen, was always going to start with the size problem. Mostly the height problem. Everything good always seemed to be kept just out of reach of small hands, and that included a decent breakfast

Rose had woken up way down in town, but she wanted food, and the place for food was the castle. ...she didn't know why she knew that, but it was totally true. Really.
"What are you staring at, silly?" she asked the girl as she tumbled into the Common Room.
Oh, Rose was going to get the sort of withering look that Effy could manage whatever age the island had stuck her at.
She also shook her head for the clarification. Not the cupboards, it was what was in them that she was getting at. Big difference that was difficult to illustrate when you couldn't reach them.
Alex, who blessedly missed this bit of weirdness, wandered into this common room because he could and he didn't want to be downstairs. Unfortunately, he missed the small children that were wandering around because he wasn't expecting that to happen again anytime soon. The island liked its cycles.
Also, they were tiny and he was not. He'd see them in a minute. Maybe.
But it appeared they'd see him first. Effy peered at him from around a table leg as he came in, taking her attention off the kitchen cupboards for the time being. He was probably getting used to getting watched by that intense blue-eyed stare. Age didn't really change that... she was just a fair bit smaller.
When someone was staring at you, it didn't take long to realize that before you were turning around and looking back.
"Jesus, again?" Alex muttered, not quite taking in the familiarity just yet because he was too stuck on the fact that there were kids here again. "You lost kid? Are just prone to staring?"
Yep, prone to staring. Silent, mildly unnerving, staring. Effy ducked under the table and wound her way to a nearer table leg to look at him from behind.
Eventually, she shook her head again. Not lost. This was all very familiar to her. Maybe she wasn't to him just yet, but the tights and shorts combo, lots of little black bracelets, and the sculls and crossbones on that shirt of hers... There were many little clues he could put together eventually.
Raven did not like this place. She'd rather be back in Azarath, where it was quiet and peaceful instead of so noisy and full of emotion, but there wasn't anything she could do about that right now. On the other hand, something she could do something about was that she was hungry. The fifth floor common room was empty, so she wandered downstairs until she found other people. "Hello," she said quietly.
Effy blinked at her, and after a brief moment lifted the hand that wasn't clutching her stuffed giraffe in a sort of wave. It was about as good at this whole 'greetings' thing as she got.
She then hopefully pointed towards the cupboards. So what if Raven was only about as big as she was. You never could tell.
Raven's gaze followed her finger. "I cannot reach there," she said solemnly. "I am too small. Can you not speak? Are you mute? Perhaps I can heal you."
Yes. Even when she was that small, that didn't change. Shhh.
Effy shook her head, fingers tightening around Pato. She could talk, and would if she absolutely had to. People were always trying to make her say things. Why'd everyone care that she was quiet?
Still, she was a little curious about this girl, and stepped closer, looking at the jewel with interest.
"Hi," Joan said carefully, studying the little girl. The gem on her head was a clear sign that she was somehow related to Raven.
... wait. Joan remembered when she had become wee. And that made more sense than having more potential kids show up. "Did you have breakfast yet, Raven?"

Duh! What did it look like she was looking at?

Nope. Still cupboards.
"I don't see anything special," Rose informed her. "Can you make 'em move with magic?"

Didn't they just do this? She eyed them warily, wondering if any of them were going to call her 'mom'.
