"What does what taste like?" he asked, peering over at her but not concealing it behind his sunglasses. "Cigarettes?"

"Yes. They don't smell like pipes," she observed. "And those are pleasant. At least the ones I've had."

"Well, they're not pipes, obviously," he pointed out. "So, yeah, they don't smell like pipes. Amazing how that goes, right?"

The roof had felt too crowded for Emma's tastes, so she'd headed towards the deck for today's smoke break, not in the mood to deal with packs of people.

Seeing Alex drew a smirk. "Being lazy, darling? For shame."

"What's so wrong about a little laziness?" he asked, giving Emma a smile when he saw her. "I'm re-energizing."

"Nothing really, I suppose," she replied, taking a seat on another chair to light-up. "But flaunting it about is cruel of you. Think of all those poor children who had classes today."

"You're right," he said, sighing in mock sadness. "How can I ever make it up to you, Emma?"

"Spent it mostly alone," he said, shrugging. "So, no, not too good. You?"

"Nothing interesting," Jack concurred. "I went to the library for class and to see my little brother. That was it. We're dull."

The religious stuff wasn't a secret; he'd just spent so long not talking about it that it didn't occur to him as a topic of discussion.

"That mean we gotta fix that or something?" Alex wondered. "Snap us out of the dull state?"

Jaina had gone for a run, thinking that might be her warmup if she decided to hit the gym later on, and slowed to a walk as she got to the dorms.

"I hear those'll kill ya," she offered. Brat.

"So everyone likes to tell me," he said and took another long drag. "You a doctor?"

"Yes, that's why I'm in high school," she nodded.

"If you're not a doctor or the surgeon general, your opinion on what's going to kill me doesn't really matter," he said, shrugging. "Besides, any fucking thing could kill me."
