Alex hadn't been down to the deck in awhile, having been spending the majority of his time on the roof. Today, though, he found himself out on the deck, lounging in one of the chairs, feet up and sunglasses on. He thought he'd be able to fall asleep, get some sun but it wasn't happening. Still, that didn't mean he was going to give up his ( Read more... )

The roof had felt too crowded for Emma's tastes, so she'd headed towards the deck for today's smoke break, not in the mood to deal with packs of people.

Seeing Alex drew a smirk. "Being lazy, darling? For shame."

"What's so wrong about a little laziness?" he asked, giving Emma a smile when he saw her. "I'm re-energizing."

"Nothing really, I suppose," she replied, taking a seat on another chair to light-up. "But flaunting it about is cruel of you. Think of all those poor children who had classes today."

"You're right," he said, sighing in mock sadness. "How can I ever make it up to you, Emma?"

"Your charming company makes a good start," Emma laughed, winking at him. "But I'm sure I can think of something."

"Aww, someone's in a flattering mood," he said, pushing his sunglasses up so he could actually see her. "I'm honored. First break of good luck I've had in a few days."

"I can't be in a good mood?" she asked, affecting a pout. "Not that I mind being a bit of good luck, if it makes your day a little brighter."

"I meant them interchangeably," he promised. "Flattering mood, good mood, all the same. Means I get the benefits and that's a plus for me. It does make my day brighter. Good mood for any reason or just a decent day?"

"I didn't actually have any classes today, beyond fencing club, I had a nice weekend off-campus, and I had some fun at girl's sleepover the other night," she replied. "So I don't mind sharing the benefits with you."

"And you know I'd share with you if I was the one having a good day," he said, grinning. "Maybe your influence can rub off on me."

And then, just because it was impossible to resist and he'd probably pop a blood vessel if he tried, he added, "Literally."

...Right. Like Emma could pass that up.

"You're a very sharing person," she agreed, deciding to abandon her chair in favor of sitting with him. "If you were having such a slow weekend, you should have given me a call. I would have stopped by before club to cheer you up." Literally.

Alex shifted over some to make room, laughing as he did so. "Well, I've got you here now, don't I? So, I'm a little late with the call. I could still use some cheering."

"Really? You seem rather cheerful to me right now," Emma pointed out. "I'm not sure what I can do to make your day better."

Well, not sure what she could do in public, but that was beside the point.

"I'm putting on a strong front," he said and shrugged. "But, I've had a day or two that went decently after a string of shitty of ones. And it's easy to seem happy when I'm being lazy. I'm never cheerful though. I don't know that feeling."

Emma just hummed thoughtfully, making herself comfortable. "I'll do my best to provide entertainment, then," she promised. "Maybe I'll get lucky and coax another smile out of you."

"Or just get lucky. I'm not picky."

Emma knew a thing or two about putting up a front. She wasn't going to force the issue, but she did like Alex enough to enjoy making him laugh.

"Hey, maybe you'll hit a homerun and get both," he said because that already made him smile again. See, she was a professional. He'd had a moment of regret about that honesty but it easily evaporated when she didn't push and just went the entertainment way. "I'm sure I can provide the second one and you're already doing well on the first. And to think, some people don't like my smile. Tragic situation."
