Jan was exploring the deck area, picking his way delicately between the chairs and the tables to sniff at the gas barbecues. He flattened his ears, because they smelled wrong, shook his head, and headed out onto the grassy area

It was a Friday night, and somehow staying in her room just felt wrong, so Angela took her mug of coffee and her sketchpad down to the deck to enjoy the last of the light.
Even a few weeks here, and the knowledge that there was in fact, a unicorn at the school, didn't really mean she was expecting to see him. She stopped, and kind of stared for a minute there.
Jan tossed another horseshoe at the stick, snorted when it missed (it was hard to aim when you couldn't see anything in front of your nose!), then turned to look at Angela, ears pricked. "Hello," he said politely. "My name is Jan."
He arched his neck, looking pleased that she'd noticed him, and trotted over to stand with his front hooves on the deck. "And to you," he replied, eyeing her sketchpad with interest. "Are you new to this island as well?"
"My name is Jan," Jan replied, nodding his head in greeting. "I've been picking them up and throwing them at the stick." He swished his tail. "It's quite a challenge!"
It was on Friday nights when she barely knew people that she missed Chicago most, she decided. There was no one to go see a movie or hang out with yet.
Of course, she realized as she spotted someone who was probably Jan, Fandom wasn't all bad. "No fair cheating," she called to him. "You have an advantage."
His ears shot forward. "That is what they are?" he asked. "Dor told me of horseshoes, but they would certainly not fit my feet." He held out a cloven hoof. "They're the wrong shape."
Penelope was exploring. Every exploration was an adventure so she went somewhere she'd not yet been. Being that, seeing a unicorn stopped her in her heels, and she could only stand there and stare in wonderment.
Jan, who had been pawing at the grass to try and get a horseshoe to stand up so he could grab it, lifted his head and looked at her. And then looked again, confused by her covered face. "Hello," he called, ears curving forward. "Are you hale?"
"I am Jan," he replied, walking over to her. "I meant are you well, unhurt. You have your face covered, and I have never seen a human do that before." He tilted his head. "Though before I came here I had never seen a human at all."
Liz was in the mood to be social and had found herself wandering out to the deck. When she spotted the unicorn playing with horseshoes, she stopped and watched even though this wasn't the weirdest thing that she had ever seen.
Jan threw another, missed again, and stamped the ground in frustration. The new arrival was a welcome distraction, and he turned to greet her. "Hello," he called. "My name is Jan."

... Or watched. Yeah, watched sounds more polite.

"I, uh, think I noticed you at the Welcome Picnic," she added with a quick nod. "Nice to finally, talk to you."

She wasn't expecting to see a unicorn playing horseshoes though.
She stood off to the side and watched.
