Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

Aug 27, 2016 03:44

It may have just been a coincidence that the weather was sunny now that Fandom was back home in Maryland, but no one was going to complain.

Okay, maybe they were going to complain a little since the sun meant it was in the high 90s 32C outside, but that just meant there was a good excuse for all the ice cream on the buffet table of picnic food ( Read more... )

The good news was, Khadgar had found people. The bad news was... well, everything else. He'd figured out that that portal was not right and now he didn't know where he was and everyone was dressed strangely and there was something about rooms with his name on it and this day was rapidly going from bad to worse.

He'd gotten one of the sticky things that people were putting on themselves and written his name down, so he felt like maybe he was blending in a little but... this was all a lot more than he expected.

Well, maybe the tiny blond with the 'WELCOME TO FANDOM HIGH, KHADGAR!!' sign would help?

Eric was also tugging a basket full of mini-pies of various flavors. Not to mention a gift bag full of Fandom-High-themed swag. Because he didn't do anything by half measures.

"Oh, good!" he chirped. "I found you!"

Khadgar stared at the sign for a loooong moment, and then stared at Eric and all his swag. "You certainly have. Hello."

"I'm Eric," he introduced himself. "I was assigned by the school as your 'big sibling', which means I'm here to show you around and help you get acclimated. So, ah, welcome!" and with that, he held out the 'welcome to Fandom' gift bag he'd assembled: a stuffed gremlin, Fandom High pennant (did they even have sports??? Eric had no idea, but the pennant was cute), a t-shirt (he'd bribed the office moose with, what else, chocolate mousse pie, to ensure the correct size), and a couple of gift cards to some of the island's restaurants. "This is just to help you get started." he explained. "And these," and now the basket of pies was being held out for his new sibling as well, "are in case you're hungry."

The pies in particular had caught Khadgar's attention, and his stomach betrayed him by growling as he looked at them. "You knew I was coming?" he asked. "This is all very, very nice of you but I wasn't expecting to end up at a school."

Eric nodded. "You wouldn't be the first one to be surprised that they're here," he shared. "I think that's part of why they assign someone to help you out, because a new school can be intimidating enough even if you're expecting it, but if you're not, well," he shrugged. "It's a lot to handle."

"Quite a lot," Khadgar said. It helped that Eric was friendly, and not a barely dressed girl. "What sort of things do they teach at this school?" he asked, taking the basket from Eric.

"Just about everything," Eric said. "I mean, all the usual things you'd expect are available as independent study," he gave Khadgar a once over. "... Although maybe what I consider 'the usual things' are different where you're from." Wardrobe alone would seem to indicate that, anyway. "But the actual classes are usually much more... practical." That was one way of putting it. "Such as how to work together in teams, or cooking classes, or piloting st- uh, ships." He didn't want to jump right in to 'starships' without finding out what kind of place Khadgar was from, first. Magic, too, was one of those things to mention that kind of depended on getting a feel for what sort of frame of reference they had to begin with.

"Those sound like interesting classes," Khadgar said, perking up. "Everything I've studied has been related to magic in some way. It might be fun to learn something new..." He laughed, shaking his head. "I can't believe I'm actually considering staying here."

"There's a bit of that, too," Eric shared. "Magic, I mean. Sometimes. But it's not like that's your only option. Sometimes, I think that whoever arranges for the new students deliberately looks for people who need a change from their usual routine." Which was, yes, his way of saying Khadgar should absolutely stay.

"What I need is a safe place to stay for a while. But a change in routine would be good too." Khadgar smiled at Eric. "If I have more questions after today, can I come and find you?"

"Absolutely," Eric nodded. "Do you- you don't have a phone, do you?"

"Was I supposed to bring one? I'm not sure what that is," Khadgar admitted.

"No, that's all right," Eric said with a smile. "It's a device that helps you communicate with people who aren't nearby," he explained. "If you'd like, we could see about going in to town to get you one? So if you had questions but didn't want to come knock on my door for whatever reason, you could. Not," he added, after a moment, "that I'd mind at all if you did stop by my room. But phones can often be faster."

"That would be good, thank you," Khadgar said. He made a mental note to try to figure out what phones were like so he wouldn't be totally clueless with Eric again. "It's nice of you to volunteer to help someone like this."
