"Not a whole whole lot," Pinkie said. "But that's because my very special talent is parties and making ponies smile, and baking fits right in there just perfectly!"

"Did you always know it was your super special talent?" she asked. "Does everyone have one? Is there a way to tell?"

"There is in Equestria!" Pinkie said. "And no, I didn't find out until I was almost a full-grown pony. I grew up on a rock farm. There wasn't a lot of smiling there. Then one day -- BOOM! -- a rainbow blasted across the sky and I grinned so so big and I just knew I had to learn how to make other ponies smile too, and so I threw a party and my family loved it and then I got my cutie mark!" Pinkie gestured to the balloons on her flank with her nose. "And that's how I knew!"

Eric had seen Pinkie at the summer's welcome picnic, of course- though at the time, he'd been brand new and convinced he was seeing things. Having spotted her around town and made a few inquiries since, he knew better now. He also could tell she was a fan of baked goods, which made him a girl (pony?) after his own heart, so here he was, trying to work up the courage to go say hi.

Pinkie noticed a shy looking person she hadn't formally met yet and simplified things by waving excitedly. "Hellooo! Would you like a cupcake?"

Oh goodness, she even sounded adorable.

"I never turn down a cupcake," Eric admitted. Though he was somewhat partial to his own rather than store-bought. But still!

These were freshly pony-made! Definitely better than store-bought.

"A human after my own pony heart! Pink, yellow, or blue?" Pinkie asked, somehow managing to offer all three as though she had three free hooves to hand out baked goods with.

Eric didn't even blink at that- after all, he was used to somehow being able to prepare and bake an entire pie within five minutes of encountering a new kitchen. Comic strip logic, you see! ... Not that he knew that.

"Think I'll start with blue," Eric said, accepting the offered cupcake. "Eric Bittle, and pleased to make your acquaintance, ma'am," he said, before starting in on the frosting.

"Oh piffle," Pinkie said, the other two cupcakes dropped immediately back on the platter so she could wave her hoof dismissively. "Call me Pinkie. It's lovely to meet you, too!"

"Pinkie," Eric echoed. "Oh! You're a teacher! You're one of my teachers!"

"The description on the syllabus looked amazing," Eric said enthusiastically. "I'm super looking forward to it."

Lottie had not quite felt qualified yet to take on big sister-hood on her own -- even fake big sisterhood through a school program -- so she was out in the general crowd, sitting inappropriately on the top of a picnic table, feet swinging in the air, while Pepper investigated a stick underneath it. She was using her keen mystery solving skills to determine what cliques any newly arriving students would belong to.

"American schools are meant to have cheerleadin cliques, I think," she remarked to Pepper. "Do they have cheerleadin here? Or sports in gen'ral?"

"Not that I've ever seen," Kathy said, smiling at her little sister from across the table. "Not even a swim team for the pool in the basement of the dorms."

"Hmm," Lottie said. "My research into the American school system says that means the school must be entirely made up of NERD CLIQUES."

Her research amounted to a fairly random selection of Hollywood teen movies, yes.
