Chemistry; Tuesday, Period One [ 01/11 ].

"Good job on survivin' yer first week of classes, kids," Kūkaku smirked at the assembled class in front of her. "I'm sure some of you have been workin' on your projects for this week, while the rest of you either slacked off or picked somethin' easy, so let's get those out of the way, and then move onto the lecture. There's safety goggles on yer ( Read more... )

It was your task to find a compound that would make the element you chose last week go boom and explode. There are safety goggles, too. Wear them, or don't. Kūkaku doesn't care so long as no one needs to go to the clinic.

"Sulfur and carbon, mix with oxygen, are the basics of fireworks," Scully said, holding up tiny quantities of same. "Sulfur and charcoal, in this case, with saltpeter. Oh, and some bits of iron for color."

The bang! was louder than the size of the bright light, but the smoke still lingered for a bit.

Scully was looking fairly perky after this.

Kūkaku could never have anything against fireworks. Well, she'd much prefer larger fireworks, but they were in a classroom.

"I like where ya went with that, Scully," she complimented with a smirk. "Now, tell me, you pick that because you know that's what I do, or is it mere coincidence?"

Scully blinked, and said honestly, "Coincidence. Also, my other option involved a microwave, and I wasn't sure I wouldn't completely wreck it if I got the proportions wrong."

Just be glad there are no jokes about solar energy being fusion because you can't go fission on the sun.

Oh, high school chemistry.

Ino was... well, a bit uncomfortable with the lecture. Last week hadn't been bad--even with the explosion it had been obvious that the guy who'd gotten exploded hadn't even been vaguely harmed, but she couldn't help the small twist in her stomach at the thought of blowing things up.

She took notes, but her thoughts kept drifting back to Konoha...

Joolushko was slightly disturbed that the instructor seemed to want to conduct nuclear experiments in class. This island was strange enough without adding radiation to the mix.

Play the Atom Building Game - Chemistry, 01/11. boobs_and_bombs January 11 2011, 05:25:40 UTC
Find a partner and either take the Atomic Challenge or play Nuclear Reactions.

Atomic Challenge:
This is the simplest game, and a good one to start with. Everyone learns how to read the periodic table and the meaning of atomic number and mass number. The game starts by dividing the marbles evenly among all players. Yellow marbles represent electrons, green marbles protons, and blue marbles neutrons. All players should use the periodic table as a reference. For convenience, two laminated copies of the periodic table are included with
the game. The object of the game is to use up the allotted marbles by adding them to the board and correctly identifying the atom that has been made. The first player to run out of marbles wins.

Nuclear ReactionsIn this game, players learn about the elements, the constitution and structure of the atom, stable and unstable isotopes, atomic number and atomic mass. Considerable strategy can be involved. The game is played with marbles and the NUCLEAR REACTIONS cards. The objective of the game is ( ... )

Tony would be on the 'make your own rules' train for this project. But that was just because this was painfully old school. Couldn't they put it on the bizarrely-common-in-his-world holographic projectors?

No, seriously. It's a special place.

He would be an awesome partner if you could stand the whining thoughtful commentary.

Scully thought this was ridiculously easy too. So she smiled at the new kid, and said, "Want to make a nuclear explosion?"

Yaaaay.

Really, who needed a chemical reaction when you had buggered-up genes to begin with?
