Parker walks onto the range, her .Sig and Glock in their locked case, and makes sure everything is ready. She posts the following two notices, to be read by everyone who wants to participate:
"That's...not very smart. Tortall doesn't have much of a navy, which is odd because two sides are completely sea locked." Alanna tries not to look too ill at the prospect of being at sea again.
Archie shrugs. "Perhaps not. Unfortunately, the Admiralty's resources are stretched a bit thin, and there's not much that lowly midshipmen can do to change that."
He notices her expression. "You've been to sea yourself?"
Alanna grimaced. "A few times. I grew up in Trebond, and the only water we get up there is ice. But at Chorus, we have sea on three sides." She thinks back. "I went out with Jon a few times, and the three summers we spent down at Fief Goldenlake with Raoul. I get sea sick. Horribly."
Archie grimaces. "Oh. I'm sorry. I was lucky enough to escape that, but a friend of mine, Horatio . . . he was miserably seasick from the second he set foot on deck, and hasn't lived it down yet. And this was in a ship at anchor, mind you. I'm half afraid that reputation will follow him the rest of his life. Damned bit of luck for an officer in the King's service, especially one as sharp as he is."
"Oh, seasickness is nothing to be ashamed of unless one actually sails for a living," Archie offers, trying to cheer her up. "It's said that some of the most brilliant admirals in the Royal Navy were actually afflicted by it terribly, for that matter. And from what I've seen of you in Fencing Club, you're damned good with a sword, more than I'll ever be."
