Raise our Goal?

Jul 14, 2007 20:42

Based on a comment and my own thoughts on the subject, a poll! I picked the $1000 goal because the progress meter needed an end point. Do we want to change the goal for Campaign #1 to something higher to give ourselves something to reach for on the way to September 1st?

Somehow 5000 feels like the next logical step. I know it's a hell of a lot. It'll be really hard to reach and it's quite possible that we won't. But it's also a motivation.
2000 feels too easy to reach the way things look right now. - I'm not saying it really is easy. Not at all. - If the next step is 5000 it feels like we actually have to do something to reach it. Donate more, spread the word, find more people who are willing to support the campaign.
1000 already is a big success and if we're aware that 5000 is a huge goal and that it's really no shame if we don't manage reach it then I think we should still try.

I am so impressed with how organized this community is, I believe that $5,000 is a reasonable goal. I think a goal of $2,000 will be met within another week or two and we will be revisiting this conversation. It is entirely possible that individuals who have donated may make other donations in the future and as word spreads, others will come on board. Also, we can try and spread the word as much as possible via our f-lists and to other Supernatural boards and JJJ fan boards, CW, twop, etc.

I promoted fandom_rocks on my journal and hope that those on my f-list will help spread the word: http://kaylie-2.livejournal.com/61960.html?mode=reply

Thanks for promoting! We are trying our hardest to get out to various boards and communities, but when a friend (in person and on my flist) tells me they had no clue I was doing this, that means we must be missing people still. Every little post helps.

I guess I'm going to take a contrary view. I also agree that $2K seems a very doable goal, but I think the problem with any fundraising effort is sustaining interest over a long period of time. And from what I understand fandom_rocks is to go on at least through the next season (and futher seasons if we're lucky to get them). That means there will be several fundraising drives going on over the next year and while on the one hand getting more publicity out there will help keep new donations coming in, it's also possible "donation fatigue" could set in. Rather than setting the bar really high for this first drive I'd say having escalating goals for future drives might be better. I think it's better to be able to announce that "we've met our goal" than "we only reached 50% of our goal." For whatever reason people tend to be more generous to successful campaigns (it also tends to make for better publicity headlines). Plus, having $1000 donation to each charity this time is still a good start ( ... )

You make some very good points here. I understand what you mean about donation fatigue setting in. I like your idea of escalating the goals for future drives.

Very good points. Campaigns after September will last six months. I think being creative about the campaigns will be a bigger and bigger part of what the three of us (and other fans) do for the campaigns so fatigue doesn't set in. I do like the idea of escalating - taking what we did the previous time and doubling it or something like that.

We haven't heard from anyone that donated directly to the charities. We just asked that if someone did they make sure to note it is a part of Fandom Rocks so we can add it to the total. We are in contact with both charities, so we can check with them if they have received things separately.

I think that raising the goal to two or three thousand would be the most appropriate. You do have to remember that the campaign only reached its first goal due to a newspaper article, and there is no guarantee that you will get another before the end date of September. That, along with the fact that in August many people will be preparing to return to school or return their kids to school doesn't suggest that money will be as readily available.

Also, asking your members for $5000 now, and then asking for it again in September, and every two months after that is a bit much in my opinion, and will burn the community out pretty fast. If the campaign was a one shot deal then I would say "reach for the ceiling", but since you want it to be an ongoing project I think a more modest goal is in order.

After September, campaigns will run for six months at a time.
