Hihara Kazuki

He's a 3rd year student from the music department. His unrestrained personality makes it so that he easily gets along with everyone he meets. He's bad with practicing persistently, so he entered the concours with the intent to just enjoy it. However, when he becomes closer to the protagonist, the way he views his own music changes.

1. Uniform: Wears an orange shirt with the words "HYPER SUMMER" under his blouse. Doesn't wear his tie nor his vest. Wears his jacket with the buttons unfastened and his pants pulled down to his
waist. This kind of unconventional style is something entirely Hihara-like.

2. Casual clothing: A red bowling shirt with classic pants. The pants have two colors. The pockets are located where the color changes. Wears a pendant on his neck and a wristband and a watch around his arms. In addition, he wears a silver wallet chain and a leather wallet cord on his hips.

4. Concours clothing: A black shirt with frills in the front and a halter-neck vest. The sleeves are folded back and held in place with arm bands. At the front of his neck, he wears a one-point pin broach.

*salty bread:souzai pan(惣菜パン), as opposed tokashi pan (菓子パン) which is equivalent to pastries. Is there a special term for salty bread in English? ^^;

Personality
His association with Yunoki, who he's really friendly with now, started when they were first years.
Their first encounter with each other was during their school entrance ceremony.

Hihara enjoys just about everything that life throws at him, so when you talk to him you can generally depend on him to greet you with a smile. Although he doesn't think too deeply about things and his introspections end in an instant, when he faces you with a smile like this, don't you just end up forgiving him!?

Personality 01
Concentration is the subject hereafter!?
Hihara is energetic, bright, and generally positive. Because he's never suspicious of people and thinks of everyone in the world as good people, he is able to chat lightheartedly with anyone and everyone, and can make friends with anyone and everyone.
Because he's an optimist who enjoys just about everything, he is extremely curious and is the type who must give everything a try. He doesn't hold any particular ideals about "wanting to play this kind of performance" or "wanting to become this kind of person," though "If you forget about doing fun things, life wouldn't be enjoyable" is his only mantra. With thoughts along the lines of everything being fine as long as you enjoy things as they come, he does not thoroughly tackle any one thing. Because of this, even though he has plenty of musical talent, he can't quite realize his true potential. Kanazawa comments that "the trumpet instructor has said that if Hihara continued to concentrate, he'd be able to put on a good performance." If Hihara were to put in more effort, his performance would instantly strengthen.

Personality 02
From the track team to the wind instrument club, and then to Seisou Academy
Hihara has friends from the normal department who are on the track team. The preface of their friendship has to do with the topic of their club activity.
Hihara jogs every morning and plays basketball during lunch, showing a side of him that loves sports. This partly has to do with the fact that from elementary school to middle school, he was part of the track team. In middle school, he happened to hear someone from the wind instrument club play the trumpet and thus became enamored, so he transfered to the wind instrument club.
Following that, he entered Seisou Academy because of its music department. For a while during middle school, he was in both the track club and the wind instrument club, but in the end, the trumpet was more fascinating, so he decided on the wind instrument club. He feels regret towards his friend on the track team, but Hihara finds the trumpet more enjoyable. Because of his opinion
that "playing the trumpet is much more fun than studying," he decided on attending Seisou Academy. His decision shocked even his own family.
The fact that he has a lot of friends from the normal department might have something to do with how he didn't originally have a background in music. He doesn't pay much attention to the wall between the departments, so he may appear in various places around the campus. He doesn't stay in one place and can be seen appearing here and there talking to various people. On Tuesdays and Thursdays when he doesn't have Orchestra club, Hihara often goes out with his friends. He might be seen with one of his favorite pasttimes: karaoking with his friends from the normal department.

Even though he's by your side, he wonders if his presence is a bother...when he thinks too much about this and that, this is the expression he shows. When he learns of the hardships of love, he begins to show you this troubled expression of his.

Personality 03
Encounter with Yunoki
On the day of the school entrance ceremony, Hihara was late. Yunoki, as the representative of the new students, left his seat in order to do the salutations. Hihara, who didn't think that Yunoki was in the same year as him, apologized for being late and asked where the school entrance ceremony was being held. Yunoki guided Hihara to where the first years were seated and then went on stage to do the salutations. Hihara, who had thought that the kind Yunoki was his upperclassman, saw Yunoki onstage and was extremely shocked.
After that, it was confirmed that the two of them were in the same class. From their friendly encounter during the school entrance ceremony, they somehow ended up being good friends. For 3 years they've been in the same class. Sometime or the other, Yunoki has become a very important friend to Hihara.

The two who are always seen together. When you encounter them for the first time, it is possible that you may meet them together.

Personality 04
Learning about love, learning about anguish
Because he's able to get along with just about anyone, he even has a lot of friends among the female students. However, there doesn't seem to be anyone who sees him as a love interest. He himself holds a certain admiration towards love. You've known about this idealistic side of his because you've heard from his friend, "This guy, although he's a romanticist, he's a good guy. So go befriend him." That very friend of Hihara's has warned Hihara that the whole "one day the fated girl will appear" business is just a fantasy, but even so, Hihara seems to want to believe in that fantasy. "If I ever find someone I love, I'd want to tell her properly that I like her. I'd like to go out with her. I'd want to visit various places with her!" are his vague thoughts on love. To him, love is something that is very sweet. He thinks it's unnecessary to think about the suffering and worry that comes with falling in love.     However, when he falls in love with you, he discovers that "loving can't be done alone." Even when one thinks one means well, it might not be what your partner wants. He is anxious about becoming someone that fits you. Because of these troubles that love brings, he finds out that the way he's been trying to play "happily" up until now is not enough. His performance becomes emotional and painful.

Love story
Hihara is cheerful and friendly. When your relationship advances,
he even starts showing you these troubled expressions of his.

1-A Main Let's become friends
You ask Hihara what he thinks about the concours. He says that he likes the concours a lot because the concours feels like a festival. "They say that 'Even a chance meeting is due to fate somewhat*.'" Hihara quotes the proverb wrongly, the way he remembers it. He tells you cheerfully that if you ever see him around, feel free to call him over.
1-B Main Romanticist?

You hear from Hihara's friend in the normal department that Hihara's view on girls is that "Guys should protect the girls."  Afterwards, Hihara's friend tells you that "This guy's a good guy, so go befriend him." Hihara is embarrassed when you find out that he's a romanticist.
1-B Sub, Romanticist? (continued)
As you're talking with Hihara, Tsuchiura comes to ask the whereabouts of a sempai from his club. When Tsuchiura hears that Hihara believes in "the fated girl," Tsuchiura smiles wryly and says "...good luck," before he heads off to search for his sempai. Hihara finds it strange that Tsuchiura laughed at his words.
1-C Main Let's both try our best.
At the main entrance, Hihara tells you "The trumpet's a good instrument too," and lets you know how fun the trumpet is. Because you have only just started playing the violin, he gives you courage by telling you, "I only just started playing in middle school, so you're fine!"
1-C Sub I forgot something
At a place where you're together with Hihara, Tsukimori delivers Hihara's musical grammar* that he left in the practicing room. Hihara tells you, "I don't like studying, so I don't don't use my musical grammar much" and shows you his clean musical grammar. He's content with being able to play music happily.
2-A Main  Becoming Friends with Everyone
When you're talking with a third year student from the normal department, Hihara appears. Hihara, who is friendly even with people from the normal department, believes that "As long as there's something to start it off, people can easily become friends." He talks about how the concours is a good chance for getting students from the normal department to like music.
2-A Sub Good Weather
Hihara praises your bumbling performance. You're surprised that you were praised by Hihara, who encourages you by saying, "Although you made mistakes, isn't it fun practicing outside when the weather's so nice?

2-B Main I guess I'll try my best
At the entrance, Hihara asks you, "Is it time for me to have to practice more seriously?" After hearing your answer, he replies "I guess I'll try my best," showing you his commitment towards the concours.
2-B Sub Lacking in Concentration
Hihara asks you and Fuyuumi, "Don't you get bored practicing the same song over and over again?" He says, "After I play a loud sound, I start wanting to play another song right after." He's frank with the fact that he doesn't have the concentration to spend a lot of time practicing one song thoroughly.
2-C Main Your Music is Fun
His favorite bread*. Reaching the goal for track and field. Making a friend in a new place... Hihara lists things that he likes, trying to explain to you just how much he likes your music. You listen to him as he gives those examples. "I wanted to tell you that your music brings me joy," he says with gratitude.
2-C Sub Pork Cutlet Sandwich
During lunch, you encounter Hihara, who came to buy bread. With his purchased bread in hand, he says, "Today's busy, so there's almost nothing left." He divides up his favorite bread and invites you to share it with him.
2-D Main Music that I don't really understand
"I'd like to give you advice, but I don't really understand the music that you like," says Hihara with distress. He apologizes for not understanding the music rendering and tendencies that you like. "I'd like to enjoy your music more," he says, letting you know that he's taken an interest in your music.
2-D Sub Will you teach me how you do that?
Hihara asks you, "What do you feel when you play those sad performances that you're so good at?" (continued on next page)

[notes]

*Hihara quotes in 1-A 袖振りあうも多少の縁when the proverb is actually袖振り合うも他生の縁. "Even a chance meeting is due to the karma in previous life."
*musical grammar:楽典. I assume it's a musical textbook. I don't know if there's better wording for this?
*Hihara's favorite bread is カツサンド, mentioned in 2-C. カツサンド = pork cutlet sandwich. Yum! Thanks for the info,
hazuki_katako!

(2-D Sub continued) When you answer, he replies, "I've never thought about performing with that kind of feeling." He is surprised at this manner of expression that he's never known.
3-A Main A Favor to ask
"I have a favor to ask," says Hihara. "I'd like to do a favor for you." Hihara wishes to be "sempai-like by listening to his kouhai's wants and fulfilling them." Though he tells you about this...
3-B Main You're trying hard
After school, you stop by the park with Hihara. When you seat yourself on the swings, Hihara looks at you and says, "Doing something that you usually don't do, it's amazing." Bashfully, he lets you know his feelings of respect.
3-C Main Even though I want to talk with you more
After watching your performance, Hihara drops his score. As you gather the fallen papers together, Hihara praises your improved performance and asks you the secret to your improvement. Your reply makes Hihara's thoughts race around in his mind. The wind scatters the score, and the two of you once again try to gather the fallen papers together.
3-C Sub I can't ask even Yunoki about this
You encounter Yunoki, who came looking for Hihara. Yunoki tells Hihara something the teacher wanted him to pass on. He is worried about Hihara, who doesn't look energetic lately. After Yunoki leaves, Hihara comments, "I really want to consult Yunoki about this, but this is something that I have to think through on my own." Hihara seems to have worries that he can't even consult his close friends about.
3-D Main A good violin
"Will you let me see your violin?" When Hihara implores you, you hand your violin to him. He holds the violin in an awkward pose and lets you know that he's thankful for your beautiful music that was born from this violin. "Your music, it's so beautiful it almost hurts." He's starting to like your music more than before.
4-A Main Let's enjoy it together
You meet a depressed Hihara who "came to buy bread." He approaches you and asks, "Are you enjoying the concours?" After hearing your answer, he says, "More than my own enjoyment, I want you to be enjoying this," letting you know his change of feelings.
4-B Main A guy's romance?
During the weekend, you go out with Hihara to the coffee shop. As you're happily chatting away with each other, Hihara says, "Eating cake like this with a girl has been a dream of mine." He happily tells you that his wish has come true.
4-C Main What I can do
You meet Hihara in the auditorium. "Have I been a good sempai?" asks Hihara. After hearing your answer, he says, "If there's something I can do for you, I'd be really happy." After sharing his feelings, he begins practicing refreshingly.
4-D Main a What it means to fall in love with someone (preface/lead in)
Hihara tells you, "I can't go home together with you for awhile." He apologizes. "I'm sorry for saying this so selfishly." He leaves, only giving you vague reasons why he can't go home with you.
4-D Main b What it means to fall in love with someone
Hihara, who has said "I can't go home together with you for awhile," asks you to meet him after school. He asks you, "What am I to you?" In a mad rush, he tries to take back his question, but for the first time he's shown you his true feelings through his question. "I want to grow up faster. If I don't, I feel I might say something I shouldn't say. If things keep going like this, it'll be embarrassing. I'll have to be patient, won't I. I can't just do things I like...I have to do the things that have to be done." He escorts you all the way home and leaves with a smile after telling you that you'll both work hard until the end.
4-D Sub a Running away
After school, Hihara is embarrassed as he asks you, "What am I to you?" When he meets you, he becomes embarrassed and runs away.
4-D Sub b Not running away anymore
Hihara apologizes for running away. "Is it okay if we go home together today?" he asks. After you accept, Hihara says, "It's a good thing I gathered up the courage to ask!" He is happy that he can go home together with you.
4-D Sub c I thought about it a lot
After seeing you home, Hihara asks you if it's okay if the two of you start walking home together again. When you accept, Hihara says with embarrassment, "I'm really happy!" He is happy that he can go home together with you.
4-E Main the color of your music
On the rooftop, Hihara requests for you to play. He feels that there is a gap between the music you play and the bright and cheerful performance that he likes. After hearing your performance, he once again acknowledges how wonderful your music is. He decides to change his view on his own music once again.
