Okay so my computer crashes uh. Multiple times!  Sometimes multiple times in one day!  (My "personal best" is seven times in one day :'( )

So I finally ran the Windows Debugging tool and I was wondering whether anyone was familiar with wtf this all means.

My computer is a Vista 32 bit system running SP1, 4.00 GB of RAM on two sticks and I have a ( Read more... )

Hard to tell without knowing which driver is going wrong. Occam's razor - hit up your graphics card company's site and get the latest version of their drivers. Then get the latest version of directx from microsoft.com.

My graphics card is an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4570 -- would that be in their 4500 series?

pfft, no wonder I couldn't find it. ATI has it listed as a desktop graphics card and I'm pretty sure I'm running a notebook XD

Are you getting an actual "Blue Screen of Death?" If so, do you have any of the hex codes? The would look like 0x######## where the # can be any number or letter.
If the antivirus isn't the cause, and you're comfortable doing it, you may be able to check if it is the memory by trying the 2 memory sticks separately. If one of them lets the system work great, and the other either doesn't let the system boot to windows or the crashing gets noticeably worse, you could run the pc with just the good stick until the warranty can replace the bad one.
Of course, if you don't feel comfortable pulling the memory, or you think the warranty company will pitch a fit about you doing it, don't try.
If you haven't backed up the system yet, I would be a very good idea to do so soon. Even assuming the warranty company doesn't make you try a restore before they'll send anyone out, with the system crashing this much, there's a good chance that sooner or later, something important to windows is going to get damaged.

I am getting the BSoDs for all of these! Which hex codes did you want? I can fish them out for you as the debugger also records what the hex codes are -- I just got lazy and didn't put them in.

I'm not sure ripping out the RAM one stick at a time is such a crash hot idea with a laptop. I'd do it for a desktop but laptops are a bit too fiddly for me without proper tools. I was thinking of backing it up today as it's got my only copy of my current honors draft and if I lose that I might end up crying, so it's good to know I'm not paranoid!

The first code on the BSoD is generally the important one, assuming it looks something like "0x### (0x###, 0x###, 0x###, 0x###)" If you see one that seems to be showing up a lot, give me that. Otherwise if you see any that are actually 0x000000## (rather than entirely random numbers and letters) give me that.
And as far as the memory, it depends on the system. A lot of manufacturers put the memory right behind a panel with just one or two screws on the back/bottom of the system to make it easy to get at, but if yours doesn't or the idea make you leery, then, yeah, don't do it.

Thinking you need to back things up is the good type of paranoid.
