My desperate urge to see the sun once in a while has come to this.

So I've figured out a commute that's 4x as expensive as my usual one but allows me to spend ALL OF IT ABOVE GROUND, ON THE RIVER. I can't do it every day, for reasons of schedule and weather and expense, but I'm excited by the prospect ( Read more... )

I'm still kind of reeling at the idea of a folding bike.

They're really common in NYC as they're nice for tiny apartments. Apparently the other big market is RVers and boaters?

At least this one's basically bike-shaped, there are some CRAZY ones out there that I'd be scared to ride! Here's a good range of them.

In writing that the bike is 4 times the cost of your normal commute, are you factoring in that you own the bike and can sell it later? Are you basing your current cost on the cost of the subway for a few months or a year?

Regardless, just having the folding bike as an option should give you some peace of mind. If there's a transit strike or some other situation, you have the bike to fall back on. Then, there's the simple pleasure of taking in NYC via the bike trail on the river and the health benefits you mentioned.

By the way, I ride one of those other folding bikes but it doesn't matter which brand you own. All that matters is that you ride.

Enjoy your new bike!

It's not the bike that quadruples the cost of the commute -- it's the ferry. The boat is almost $8 each way! If the ferry ran longer hours I could actually drop my PATH/Subway passes, but I think the extra cost is worth it... my windowless office + current entirely underground commute mean I hardly see daylight, and it's making me just a little bit stir crazy. I'm going to have to remember to slather on sunscreen when I first venture out or I will fry. :-)

The whole process actually started with me wondering what my options were if there's a strike or signal failure or some other weird problem keeping me from getting home the normal way. I'm very glad to have a backup plan now.

I get my bike in the mail tomorrow -- so excited!
