Blackpool...

I finished watching Blackpool this morning. I loved it. As a genre, it pretty much defies description: murder mystery, soap opera, black comedy, musical, psychological drama - bits of all of that mixed together, and I'm not sure it wasn't a morality play more than any of the rest, though what the moral was, I'm not sure ( Read more... )

If you get a chance and can find it, check out the sequel "Viva Blackpool".

Also.

We are making an American version. Why, God only knows.

An American version of Blackpool.

My goodness. My mind is boggling.

How? I mean, isn't Las Vegas already Las Vegas?

I'm not sure whether to laugh - yes, I'm laughing - or to despair.

If it has David Tennant in it, I forgive everything.

It's called Viva Laughlin, so I imagine it's about one of those small towns suddenly getting gambling casinos

ACTUALLY. It appears to have some clips up on Youtube, leading me to wonder if it's already aired or is airing SOON.

That is Hugh Jackman. Amazing. Turns out he's one of the executive producers.
See the IMDB listing at http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0878801/fullcredits#cast.

The tone is so different. It looks so weird. And the guy playing Ripley Holden is so unlike David Morrissey. I think I'm even more mind-boggled and incredulous after seeing this than I was before.

Well... we sort of DO see reunion, of Natalie and Carlisle, during the last song - we see Peter staring at a chip, his face as, um, down as it can get, and then Natalie is there and bites the chip, making him brighten up. (yes, that's all we see, but still... it's there).

As for Ripley, there is a one-off continuation (Viva Blackpool) which I haven't seen, but basically - Ripley goes to Vegas, and then returns... converted to a love-chapel kind of... minister. From the original cast, only he and Shyanne are in Viva Blackpool (which to me does mean that Carlisle took Natalie somewhere far from Blackpool, bless his twisted soul).

Yes, I liked the scene with a chip. But I am of a mixed mind about the implications of scenes during the songs anyway, and given that we saw what they said and did when they were lovers, and when they fought and parted, and when she turned him down, I wanted to see what they said when they got back together again.

You're right, it was something. I should be grateful for what I got.

Ripley goes to Vegas, and then returns... converted to a love-chapel kind of... minister.

This reminds me of Velvet Underground. It does sound suitable. But I don't think it would make me like Ripley any more!

(which to me does mean that Carlisle took Natalie somewhere far from Blackpool, bless his twisted soul).

Wherever he was from? Now, there's the story I want to see!

Oh yes. I wanted more of Carlisle/Nat in the end all right! Especially after that scene (another one when I wanted to choke him, and her), and the elaborate dance between the two of them at Shyanne's wedding...

I actually like Ripley a lot more than I did after episode two, and am thoroughly spooked by Danny boy.

And, I'm not sure if I'm right, but I think that Carlisle mentioned that he was originally form Blackpool, but grew up elsewhere (presumably, elsewhere in Scotland, judging by the accent ;) )

More Carlisle. The Carlisle/Natalie story YES! Me wants.

But I guess they won't do it, not after Recovery... *sighs*

Yes! I found Carlisle more interesting than Riply, and was most frustrated at that point - enjoying the show immensely, but I wanted to shout, "Give us more of what Carlisle's going through! More Carlisle, less Ripley!" I loved it that Carlisle went to arrest Ripley for murder at his daughter's wedding - was he just moving as fast as he could, or was he taking a vicious delight in doing it then and there?

I actually like Ripley a lot more than I did after episode two, and am thoroughly spooked by Danny boy.The writing was good and I loved it that we never quite knew what to make of them. But I found the characterization there either random or weak - or perhaps just manipulative. The way Ripley treated Shyanne and Natalie in the first few episodes - it didn't make sense that he would change so much in his insight by the end, even if ( ... )
