  • I was already thinking of John Barrowman today, because of the nice photo I posted earlier. This evening when I went to buy some veggies at the local grocery store, I heard his voice: the supermarket background music was his Can You Feel the Love Tonight. I haven't heard any of his songs in public places before. It made me feel all warm and ( Read more... )

That reminds me of the two winters I lived on Lake Erie [g].

I guess "Winter is Coming" looks pretty much the same everywhere!

Well, no. Port Clinton, Ohio, is the only place I've ever lived where I was able to watch a body of water freeze over for the winter. It was quite the novelty to me at the time (but then I grew up in Southern California, where "winter" consists of either pouring rain, 80dF+ temps and Santa Anna winds, or the occasional very rare frost).

Proving that not all winters are created equal. It was a shock to me, for example, to go to the Chicago area in January and discover that it was just as cold as it is here, but there was no snow and ice. It felt so weird.

At one point when I was in the Caribbean last January, someone asked a guide if the weather in Honduras was "always like this". "No," said the guide, "it's different in winter."

And I thought: If January isn't winter, what is? But I didn't have the chance to ask.

They were playing MCR's Sing at the supermarket the other day. Gave me a nice tingle of familiarity and surprise. :)

The combination of brain collapse and the wrong exam paper sounds like an absolute nightmare. I think I'd have been scarred for life. *shudder* My mind's only ever gone blank during one exam - a three hour final for my MSc. It happened years ago, and it's only recently that I've ventured back into the fray, with written tests in my first year of Spanish and the national O-level exam last year. Thankfully without a repeat of the nightmare!

The brain is a funny thing when it comes to exams. I've sometimes had the worst problems when I am most prepared. The worst was my finals for my Honours B.A., when I had insomnia for a week and wrote most of them in a fugue state - but got good marks, which was encouraging. It had a reassuring effect, giving me the knowledge that even if I go into a state of catatonic shock, as long as I can hold the pen I'll probably do all right in the end.

Hopefully, anyway.

I've yet to hear MCR in a supermarker - I live in hope!
