  • I was already thinking of John Barrowman today, because of the nice photo I posted earlier. This evening when I went to buy some veggies at the local grocery store, I heard his voice: the supermarket background music was his Can You Feel the Love Tonight. I haven't heard any of his songs in public places before. It made me feel all warm and ( Read more... )

That reminds me of the two winters I lived on Lake Erie [g].

I guess "Winter is Coming" looks pretty much the same everywhere!

Well, no. Port Clinton, Ohio, is the only place I've ever lived where I was able to watch a body of water freeze over for the winter. It was quite the novelty to me at the time (but then I grew up in Southern California, where "winter" consists of either pouring rain, 80dF+ temps and Santa Anna winds, or the occasional very rare frost).

Proving that not all winters are created equal. It was a shock to me, for example, to go to the Chicago area in January and discover that it was just as cold as it is here, but there was no snow and ice. It felt so weird.

At one point when I was in the Caribbean last January, someone asked a guide if the weather in Honduras was "always like this". "No," said the guide, "it's different in winter."

And I thought: If January isn't winter, what is? But I didn't have the chance to ask.

Hee. That reminds me of the time I was on a walking tour of New Orleans's Garden District (which did not have what I think of as actual gardens, much to my disappointment) with a lady who'd obviously lived there far too long. It was a couple of days before Halloween, in the upper 80s and humid, and she kept going on about what a nice fall day it was.

She wouldn't have known a real fall day if it came up and slapped her in the face, I don't think [wry g].

Chicago does get snow and ice. Ask norabombay. It just doesn't stay on the ground for the whole winter.

Yeah - snow and ice is Ottawa's specialty. We just don't get to see the ground from December to April, usually.

Re a fall day in New Orleans: I suspect there are things that to them seem like autumn weather - a change in the light, perhaps?

Possibly. But upper 80s and humid are a miserably hot summer day, not a pleasant fall one. No matter who you are or where you live [g].

I wonder what she'd think of the 40s and pouring rain I'm living with right now. She wants fall? I'll show her fall!

Yup. We had a beautiful fall this year. And I notice the snow from yesterday is still on the ground this morning.
