He should have left Gray alone, in hindsight. But how was he to know? It should have been the happy miracle he meant it to be.

Yes, John should never have found Gray. And if he hadn't... Well, perhaps he would never have seen Jack again. Or perhaps Jack would have found Gray first, with equally horrific tragedy - or worse. John could not have known what Gray would be, and John's intentions were not only benign, but heroic.

Tragic all the way, especially if it drove Jack further away from him.

He had all that impact just from his first appearance. I thought he was brilliant - still do. Lots of potential there, too.
