X-Men Origins: Wolverine...

X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Lots of action, lots of movement, many close-ups of Hugh Jackman breathing heavily. Not a bad thing. It isn't the X-Men movie I really want - I'll never get that - but it was fun in many ways. They played fast and loose with the canon I know - but the comics have done that, too. What a feared most was that Gambit ( Read more... )

I found the idea of nearly immortal half-brothers living through ages, watching each others backs, to be very intriguing. Unfortunately, Logan and Creed were a poor choice for the brothers.

"did Creed seem watered down, more human, not nearly as nasty as he is in the comics?"
It depends on the comic. The more sympathetic the writer wants Creed to be, the watered down he is, perhaps understandably. For example, in Exiles, he's the team leader and pretty much all human.

But yes, he's watered down here.

I totally agree about Wade

I agree absolutely.

Besides which, I found Victor Creed's motivation rather insubstantial. Sure, he was never a saint, but why did he go bad so thoroughly, when he'd initially been - well, less of a monster?

Exiles is an alternate universe, isn't it? Where Creed isn't so bad?

I want the real Deadpool, the merc with a mouth. But I thought Ryan Reynolds was nicely gorgeous. Lots of good looking men in this movie.

Yes! I sort of got the feel "It's just a comic/movie. Who needs motivation?" Which is not a good vibe to get during a movie based on a comic.

You could say that. :) Exiles are a collection of X-Men which have been gathered from various alternate universes. They travel from one alternate universe to another and fix things that have been wrong. So, very, very alternate. Creed in that comic is from the Age of Apocalypse -alternate universe.

Yeah. Which is... not really good. In the best comics, motivation is as clear as in any novel. But this movie wasn't really interested in that kind of detail.

Thanks for explaining about Exiles. I did like the Age of Apocalypse setup.

I'm curious about what you'd really want now? I've never thought the X-Men films were all that, but I've never read the comics or seen the animation so I've never been disappointed in them.

I enjoyed Wolverine superficially as a superficial film
but I thought the pacing was a bit odd.

If they wanted Wade Wilson, they should have followed through with Deadpool

I'm pretty sure I saw somewhere that there was a Deadpool film being mooted... aha here it is. I think they'll have to un-Weapon XI him for that.

One makes allowances for the sake of aesthetics.

One certainly does if it results in a naked Hugh Jackman running around!

I wished, fervently, that they hadn't made Victor Creed and Logan half-brothers

Didn't one of the X-Men writers envisage Creed as Logan's biological father initially?

A friend of mine is already fervently in search of Wolverine/Gambit slash - and I wouldn't mind it myself so let me know if you find any.

Character-based adventure stories with strong and interesting women. X-Men at its best is very clever - good banter, good personality interactions.

Woo! Thank you! This sounds brilliant! (Yes, hope springs eternal.) Deadpool is (or should be) a great character, and he's very cinematic. Like... Spider-Man with an edge, and dubious morality.

I think they'll have to un-Weapon XI him for that.

Yup. A dream, a hoax, an imaginary story... Actually, it would be easy to fix him: he has regenerative powers (like Wolverine).

One certainly does if it results in a naked Hugh Jackman running around!

Exactly! And those scenes were great. Wolvie at his best. Not just naked, but befriending innocents and wearing that motorcycle jacket and... well, just being Logan.

Didn't one of the X-Men writers envisage Creed as Logan's biological father initially?

Initially, yes. We all expected that to happen. It didn't.

That'd certainly be slash with panache--and *real* slash!
