[Review] [Wrestling] EPW, Whitby Leisure Centre, 11/10/09

I have to admit, one thing I didn't expect to find in my immediate neighbourhood here was a local wrestling promotion! However, EPW seem to be it, around here, if you want to watch men in spandex. So, having seen their posters around town offering "American Wrestling" live, I figured I'd go along and see how the homegrown talent does it. Especially ( Read more... )

I know we've discussed the wrestling thing before, so I won't go there... but I admit that you described the show so well that I could see the entertainment value in it. (If it's theater rather than masquerading as legitimate sport, I don't have so much of a problem with it.)

And my favorite line of all? "I hastily hammered a few more nails into the mental beam from which I was suspending my disbelief." Sums everything up so well!

Thanks for the shared entertainment, and yay for great nights like this.

*nods* I regard wrestling as the carnival sideshow it originated as, really, and as such I consider it fantastic entertainment. I do wish people wouldn't muddy the waters by trying to pretend like it's a regular sport, tbh.

Hee, that beam is pretty sturdy, for the record. It takes quite a bit to make it creak - and I've hung some very unlikely things on it over the years! :)

And I'm glad if my review gave you a bit of a share in the fun - that's what I write 'em for, after all. ^_^ Cheers!

I keep hearing as much... though I generally don't like South Park, so I guess we'll see!

You lead such a charmed life, if that's the word for it. I didn't know WWW played in England.

Eh, there's pro wrestling fans in almost every country of the world that hasn't banned fun, AFAIK, so WWE pretty much tour everywhere - including US military bases in the Middle East as a regular thing for the troops, which I think is pretty awesome.

But when they're not in town, the local versions are fun too. ^_^

I guess that makes sense for the troops. You get to let off a little bloodsport steam watching men wrestle after you've been waiting weeks or months for something to happen.

There's a local team?

Well, and also a lot of army guys are WWE fans when they're at home, so it's pretty cool for them to have these guys who they admire come out there and sit in tents with them and shake their hands. People get just as devoted to wrestling as they do to rock bands and stuff, so the WWE are big on showing their military fanbase support/respect.

There's a local team?Er, yes, that was what I said in the review. See above mention of "local wrestling promotion EPW", and I even mentioned that one of their guys is Whitby born! Wrestling promotions - ie, individual organisations who put on wrestling shows with their own, house wrestlers - come in all sizes from WWE at the top down to little, local "we have five guys, a ring, and a lass in a short skirt to do the announcing" groups. Most of these small bodies do not turn much in the way of money and are populated by wrestlers who are doing it primarily for fun, or else are hoping to work their way up to the bigger promotions ( ... )
