So, it appears I got the finance job at the prison! My agency told me the prison want me to start at the end of this week, but I don't know how long the security check is going to take and I'll have to get my bar shifts covered, so I asked her to let me know when they have a firm start date for me ( Read more... )

Hey, I just wanted to add my "Congratulations!" to the pile. :) But I'm a little curious, haha, does it unsettle you at all, working in a prison?

It's gonna be kinda weird, for sure. I have to hand my mobile phone in at security (how will I cope?!), carry a big bunch o' keys and there are about 3 lockable doors between the entrance and the offices. If there are any prisoner problems the entire prison will be on lock-down until the issue is resolved, so I hope that doesn't happen too often. But I won't actually be anywhere near the prisoners, unless one is being escorted through the courtyard at the the same time I get to work. I can always hide behind the gate until they've gone in! I'm quite excited...!

No benefits, because I'm employed by the agency, not the prison service. I haven't even asked how much I'll be paid, but it must be at least equal to what I get at the bar. The upside is that the hours are consistently greater, so I'll earn more regardless. I'm going to stay on at the bar just one shift a week (any more than that and I won't be able to visit Gavin) so I can bump up my hours if there's a period of unemployment between this position and the next.

Although, having said "no benefits", the agency I'm with is one of the few who claim to pay for holiday and sick leave. I'm not entirely sure what the entitlement is, nor whether I accrue these benefits from the day I start, but I don't think it's worth asking about them until I at least get a start date. I'm going to ring the agency later today if I haven't heard anything by 4pm. I'm starting to get a little frustrated....
