"A muffin's fine," Morgan said, opening yet another cabinet. "Ok, I give up, where do you hide the sugar?"

The dog came and sat at Morgan's feet, looking up at him with her brown beagle eyes. She asked if he was leaving; he said that he was, but he'd be back later - though not in any vocal way. He still wasn't accustomed to talking with animals like he did.

The dog resigned herself to a day without her new buddy and trotted out of the kitchen.

Morgan took a deep breath and let it out slow. "A whole lot of little things," he said, fixing his coffee without looking at Isaac. "Things we ought to have talked about before, but you know how it is, she doesn't say when something bothers her and it festers until she blows up about it one day out of the blue, and of course I yell right back, and ... " He shook his head. "I'm not making much sense. But the whole thing doesn't make sense to me. Not that it much matters; she's leaving for England." He met his friend's eyes at last and smiled, a thin, pained smile. "Being the lawyer she is, she had it all drawn up before she even told me about it."
