So many intelligent young people, particularly in the teen-age and young adult years, feel as though they have to make an attempt to adhere to popular culture's standards of 'what a young person should like'. I have now finished the whole lot of the Sandman graphic novels, thanks to the SF Public Library and a certain website that has scans of most of the volumes that weren't at the library. I was just reading the 'A Game of You' volume of The Sandman, and I was impressed that a work from the early Nineties actually had a relatively sympathetic trans woman character. I mean, the people around her, save her best friend Barbie, didn't always treat her the way she wanted to be treated, but she herself was painted as good and well-meaning ( Read more... )

I have just finished Stardust, which I checked out yesterday. I thought it was a good book, although I don't think it's quite the same calibre as the Sandman stories.
