I cannot begin to describe the strangeness of that port. It was not due to my form, but the life which that being led. It was a life full of misery, rejection by others, isolation and pain. I would not wish it upon anyone, although I do believe that I found a type of peace within myself by the end of it. The bridge was not a place for any man, but ( Read more... )

He was in desperate need of someone to talk to. Even if it only was over his shoes. Do you still have my ring, by the way?

What did it feel like? Being... rejected like that?

I do. It was a most strange thing to give away. Your wife within the port would not have been most amused.

It was most horrible. After many years, I believed that I did not want to know people. But still, I did desire it.

Oh, it wasn't my wedding ring. It was a signet ring - both his and mine, it would seem. Not that either of us would have cared if it was a wedding ring.

So how did you treat people, when they encountered you?

Oh. I had thought that it was. Marriage is so common in most places.

Unkindly, for the most part. I demanded goods from them, simply because I knew that they had little else to offer me.

Peace is not easy to find in a state like that.

I do not think it was true peace, but it was of the same ilk. There is only so much pain one can feel before it all fades to an ache.

I had always hoped that my wife would appear on the barge, but I feel in my heart it will not happen.

That is so very sad! No one should have to live in such a way, even just for a few days. Are you all right?

I believe that I am. I merely find myself thinking back to similar beings.

[She's quiet while she chooses her words; Arkady knows an epiphany when she sees one.]

One of the saddest things is to be connected to a society that has no real place for you. People need people, even if those people are rather different. I know this firsthand.

That is quite true. There is nothing crueler than to experience this, or to force it upon another.

[He's suspicious. And waiting for the other shoe to drop.]

And that's it? There's no catch?

There is no catch. I have never treated you half as well as you deserve.

Hm. Then if you're sincere, I accept the apology. [HE DOESN'T FORGIVE, but hey, acceptance is better than nothing.]
