I do enjoy that your streak of Heyers is roughly like my streak of Ellis Peters books. Also a generalised rec - you might enjoy the Yashim mysteries by Jason Goodwin (The Janissary Tree and The Snake Stone) which are set in early 1800s Istanbul and are a pleasant mixture of redolently-described smells and tastes and brisk, uncluttered action, with a very likeable and slightly unusual protagonist.

I regret only that I have one life to throw away on reading Heyer novels. And Wodehouse novels. Sometimes I look at my dramatic prose and think, WHY AM I NOT WRITING ROMPS. EVERYONE LOVES ROMPS.

Ooh, thank you. What's the first one called?

I don't know! Why *aren't* you writing romps? They are tremendously good fun to write as well as read.

The Janissary Tree.

GOOD QUESTION. Luckily the next short story I want to write is 100% romp. Well. 95% romp and 5% science.
