The Dark Knight is...

..at least really disappointing, and probably not a good movie. Heath Ledger is really good in it, but there isn't that much of him, and it feels like they held back on his craziness. I'm not sure if I'm a fuddy duddy, but The Dark Knight was like X-men 3 where it was just one silly plot point after another with very little character development, ( Read more... )

I don't really agree that it wasn't a good movie but I do agree that it was disappointing, especially because of the "batman justifying george bush" stuff. the part with the people on boats was totally insincere too- "you can't corrupt people joker! they are good!.... oh except for harvey dent, who represented purity for the first half of the movie and is now totally corrupted". I mean I definitely enjoyed watching the movie and thought the plot twists and action and acting were all great but seriously "sometimes people don't know whats best for them and thats why it is ok to lie" is a pretty bullshit message. and (in reference to mark's comment) as far as batman not being the hero, that was kind of a central message of the movie right? that he's not acting like a hero, but we know he is because he really has the best intentions.... just like george bush!

well i agree that's one way to look at it. i mean they kind of make that point at the end of the movie but that felt tacked on to me, like they were like "oh shit, isn't this movie supposed to be about batman?" it wasn't until the last 5 minutes that suddenly the movie was about how it was ok for batman to be evil. most of the second half was about how it wasn't ok for batman to be evil ( ... )

I remember Dan saying that for the theatrical release they cut down like an hour's worth of material, and most of that I'd imagine would be more focused on character development. Maybe the 3.5 hour version of Dark Knight would help with those issues.

I like what Mark said too about the whole "absolute power corrupts absolutely thing" -- and I appreciated the statement via the scared boat people about the great moral-normalizing powers of democracy, even if it arrived in a sort of logistically confusing way.
