I feel safer

I just read that a woman was harassed and detained for having tap water in a sippy cup for her toddler.

I demanded to speak to a TSA [Transportation Security Administration] supervisor who asked me if the water in the sippy cup was 'nursery water or other bottled water.' I explained that the sippy cup water was filtered tap water. The sippy cup ( Read more... )

TSA is a joke, always has been. I find that it's the initial first few moments of contact you have with them that sets the stage for how things will proceed. After all, it's a slightly above minimum wage person in a rent-a-cop uniform. The vast majority of them don't have the confidence to back up the ego they try to project so as soon as you look them in the eye and say, "Get me your supervisor, this line is stopping right now," it normally gets results. I've been able to take more than "3 oz" of whatever through on a couple of occasions using this tactic (at several different airports). Mostly it's cuz I forgot but seriously, I'm not buying more toothpaste because I have 4 oz of it left in the tube.

Security is an illusion to keep the sheep from worrying/asking questions. At least take comfort in knowing you're not one of them. :)

It's true that airport security is all an illusion. But honestly, it's the scariest part about flying for me. I'm just waiting for someone in charge to realize that the no-fly lists and war on moisture just aren't working for anything other than inconvenience to the cattle class.

From the ones I've talked with, they already know. They can't admit it in so many words, but they know. I mean really, a logical thinking person should be able to see the holes in their "strategerey"... they're big enough to drive a Mac truck through.

To be fair, being dressed like a pilot does give you some authority when you go through the lines. Also having your shoes off, your laptop out, and any liquids out before you even get to the bins shows you to be a regular traveler and thus a lot less worth hassling.

Usually when I fly, I've got my shoes off and the laptop out and the pockets emptied and such, but that doesn't change the fact that I'm utterly terrified. When I went through security in London (once upon a time) my bag was chosen for a random search, but the guy was very nice and repacked it all very neatly, all the while joking and laughing with me. I was never afraid of security there. What's wrong with America? (Don't answer, I already know.)

My boyfriend visited a couple weeks ago, when he was going through security at the Akron-Canton airport the day he left he accidentally dropped a penny when emptying his pockets and got yelled at because he was just going to leave it. What is a penny going to do?
