I made a promise to myself about four years ago when I got into Reed. I said, "Vera, don't let Reed tear you down. Don't get so caught up in the intellectual masochism that you lose your sense of self." I'm not sure if I succeeded or not.

Josh and I both made the same kind of boasts when we were freshmen. We don't care that much about academics, not at the cost of sanity.
