Faith carefully counted out the change in her pocket and carefully set it on the cold marble gravestone. She refused to go home while her mother entertained her supposed gentlemen callers. Instead she’d rather freeze her ass off by spending it in a cemetery three days from Halloween than endure her drunk mother and her pimp boyfriend.
She shivered as she pulled the collar up on her lightweight denim jacket and she regretted her decision to look cool that morning instead of being practical. Then again, her mother had been gone for the past week and Faith didn’t think that her mother would be back for another week or so. Instead she had come home after school only to discover that her mother was back so Faith had taken off without a word.
Now she was hoping that she’d have enough spare change to get herself a cup of coffee from the late-night convenience store so that she’d have something to keep her hands warm while she counted down the hours as they dragged on.
She felt a rush of short-lived happiness when she pulled out the final coins from her pocket that meant she could buy herself a coffee without having to panhandle. And as she walked from the graveyard to the store, Faith wished that she could somehow find a way to escape her life. Anything would be better than this meaningless existence where she was doomed to live her mother’s junkie life.
